The police have initiated a formal investigation into the case involving the late actor Lee Sun Gyun.
On January 18, the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency's Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit announced the start of their investigation into a case previously handled by the Incheon Police Agency. This case involves actor Lee Sun Gyun, who faced drug use allegations.
The shift in investigative authority to the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency comes after the Incheon Police Agency requested external assistance on January 15. This move aims to address potential bias concerns and ensure fairness in probing the leaked information about Lee Sun Gyun's case.
Lee Sun Gyun's drug use allegations first came to light on October 19 last year, under reports referring to him as "top celebrity L." Issues of premature identity disclosure arose during the initial internal investigation.
Legal sources indicate that the allegations were brought to the police's attention not by a statement from a 29-year-old entertainment establishment manager (identified as A) but from a tip-off by a 28-year-old former actress (referred to as B). B approached the police on October 10, presenting A's hair as evidence and implicating Lee Sun Gyun based on recorded phone conversations. B was later arrested for extorting 50 million KRW (37,317 USD) from Lee Sun Gyun under coercion charges.
Lee Sun Gyun, who had been summoned for police questioning three times, was found dead in a vehicle on December 27 of last year.
Film director Bong Joon Ho, singer Yoon Jong Shin, actress Yoon Yeo Jeong, and others have actively advocated for the enactment of a so-called 'Lee Sun Gyun Prevention Law,' focusing on preventing human rights violations by investigative agencies.
