A man has been sentenced to an unprecedented 50-years in prison for attempting to rape a woman and murder her boyfriend.
On December 1 KST, the 11th Criminal Division of the Daegu District Court (presiding judge Lee Jong Gil) sentenced 'A' (age 28), who had been indicted and arrested on charges of sexual violence and attempted murder, to 50 years in prison. Upon completion of his prison sentence, 'A' will face employment restrictions in jobs related to children, adolescents, and individuals with disabilities for 10 years, and will wear a GPS monitoring device for 20 years.
[Trigger Warning]
On May 13 at approximately 10:56 PM, 'A' sought out a female victim in Buk-gu, Daegu, after disguising himself as a delivery driver. He discovered woman 'B' (age 23) and trailed her as she returned home, following her inside. 'A' then cut 'B's wrists with his own weapon and attempted to rape her, assaulting her with his fists and feet when she resisted.
During this process, 'A' also used his weapon to attack 'C' (age 23), 'B's boyfriend, stabbing him in the face and the neck.
As a result of this incident, 'B' suffered ruptures in the arteries in her wrists, causing significant damage to the nerves. 'C' underwent surgery for over 20 hours, but due to severe brain damage, he will live with a permanent disability at the cognitive level of an 11-year-old.
The prosecution initially sought a 30-year prison sentence for 'A', but the judge imposed a sentence 20 years longer.
The judge explained the decision by stating, "Despite the significant emotional and economic shock suffered by the victims and their families, the defendant made no effort towards restitution." The judge also mentioned, "Taking into account the fact that the victim's family requested severe punishment," as part of the sentencing rationale.
Aside from a life sentence, 50-years is considered the next longest sentence given in court for severe crimes.
So probably 30 days for the attempted rape and 49 years 11 months for the attempted murder.
