"Stealing Japan's water," Controversial conduct of North Korean soccer players at the Asian Games spark heated reaction from the internet

North Korea's participation in the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games has garnered significant attention even before the event's commencement. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had previously suspended North Korea for refusing to send a team to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. However, as of December 31, 2022, this suspension was lifted, thereby reinstating their eligibility to participate in international multi-sport events.

Following a five-year hiatus since their last appearance at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, North Korea marked their return with a considerable delegation. They brought a team of 185 athletes, competing across a broad spectrum of 18 different sports.

Throughout the competition, their standoffish behavior became a significant topic of discussion. The North Korean contingent was noted for avoiding any contact with South Korean journalists and athletes, particularly in the post-match scenarios. The players were observed refusing group photos and forgoing handshakes with South Korean athletes.

The disrespectful attitude of North Korean athletes was not solely reserved for South Korean athletes. The tension was palpable during the hotly contested soccer match between Japan and North Korea on October 1, which concluded with Japan's victory with a score of 2-1.

The North Korean team was criticized for its aggressive behavior during the match. They racked up six yellow cards for rough play and exhibited a rude demeanor towards their competitors. These actions were recorded, and various videos surfaced on the internet, showcasing the North Korean team's exasperating conduct.

During one of the second half's drink breaks, a North Korean player, Kim Yusong, set a contentious tone by stealing a water bottle from the Japanese staff. He even threatened to hit the staff member, an action that did not escape the referee's attention and resulted in a yellow card.

Similarly, the team showed signs of aggression towards the referee, when he awarded a penalty kick to Japan during the match.

Why let North Korea play if they can’t get along with other countries. They should just ban them

This is why North Korea is and will continue to be the joke of the world. Despicable behavior. Players shouldn't have been allowed to continue to play and NK should be banned from future competition.
