K-pop group KINGDOM recently addressed the controversy surrounding their use of Islamic scriptures. The issue arose during the release of their 7th mini album 'History of Kingdom: Part Ⅶ.' in Seoul on October 18 KST. The release was marked by a grand showcase, showcasing ‘JAHAN (History of Kingdom: Part 7. Jahan)’.
Originally, KINGDOM had planned to launch pre-order sales for the album on September 21 KST. However, these plans were postponed when it was noted that two of their album's cover images bore a striking resemblance to Islamic scripture from the Quran. Destruction of the Quran is considered blasphemous and forbidden in most countries where Islam is the state religion.
In response to this realization, KINGDOM made the decision to discard and reproduce all 70,000 copies of the album's first edition.
This issue was braught up during the album's release event, addressed by Dan, "We were midway through our North American tour at the time and learned about the controversy through social media. It was completely unexpected as we were ignorant about the issue. It's important to note that our intent wasn't to disrespect the Islamic culture, but we weren't informed enough about it," he explained.
He further reassured, "We sincerely apologize to all Muslims who might have been hurt by this. As a team that aims to reinterpret and showcase cultures around the world through our music, we commit to giving thoughtful consideration to the concepts we use in the future and will strive to prevent such misunderstandings from occurring again."
Meanwhile, eager fans can look forward to listening to KINGDOM's new album, including the title track "Coup d'Etat". Fans can expect that the same dedication to showcasing diverse cultures and masterful storytelling will continue to be KINGDOM's signature brand.
