'D.P.' director Han Joon Hee candidly talks about the message he wants to deliver through season 2

AKP STAFF

On August 8, Maeil Business Newspaper published an exclusive interview with 'D.P.' director Han Joon Hee.

Through the interview, director Han revealed his candid thoughts on the second season of the popular Netflix series. He began by sharing, "'D.P.2' is a sad story. It's an extremely sad story and it's not a story about a specific institution or a group. But it's a story about how an individual goes through the sad times."

He continued, "The most difficult part was 'Why should I do season 2?' We were able to get a chance to continue the story thanks to all the people who loved the series. But I had to contemplate how I can bring this story forward even one step."

He added, "I believed I had to show something better. I didn't want change but I didn't want to stop the story in such a hopeless reality."

Director Han also shared his views about the issues in the drama. He explained, "There were definitely soldiers who were whistle-blowers and there were people who worked hard while sacrificing themselves. And there still are. That's why the military improved. There were people who raised their voices saying 'Isn't this wrong?' although there were very few."

Regarding the characters, Director Han Joon Hee shared, "I, unconditionally, thought that Ahn Jun Ho (played by Jung Hae In) should apologize to Park Sung Woo (played by Go Kyung Pyo). During season 1, Ahn Jun Ho and Park Sung Woo got into a physical fight in the beginning, but Ahn Jun Ho never apologized for it. I don't think I can let Ahn Jun Ho slide because of his character. I didn't want to make any of the characters drafted into the army either too good or too bad of a person. I wanted Jun Ho's apology to show that his actions before were just the immature decision of a man in his early 20s."

The director also revealed that he doesn't want to make an absolute victim or an absolute perpetrator in the drama. He explained, "I didn't want to portray any of the enlisted soldiers, who were drafted to the military, as consistent perpetrators or consistent victims. The same goes for Kim Ru Ri and also for Hwang Jang Soo. I didn't want to make the characters themselves be just absolutely evil or just unconditionally pitiful. They are all people in their early 20s who joined the military due to the conscription system, aren't they? I thought that there must be two sides to each story."

He also shared, "In season 2, I wanted to show that Jun Ho, Ho Yeol, Bum Goo, and Ji Seop struggle to do something, different from Season 1 where everything was realistic and there's nothing they can do."

About a potential season 3, the director shared, "I didn't think of a new story yet. I think people will be curious about season 3. But the same went for season 1, and season 2. They were created in 12 parts and I think I tried my best to wrap up each loose end. Of course, if I am given the opportunity, I'll think about it, but I haven't thought about (season 3) yet."

This show was really good and the director/writers did a great job continuing the story in season 2. All their stories made me cry but that bus scene irked my soul cause at the end of the day he is continuing to be carefree and make friends laugh and live his life after all the unnecessary shit he caused many especially Choi Suk Bong

It was a great pt. 2. It can be done (still not over the complete mess of Duty After School pt. 2 and half a mess Island pt. 2).

The Nina episode was flawless. Bae Na Ra delivered a showstopping performance. Man, how that episode broke me.
