[Spoilers Ahead]
Min Woo Hyuk recently met with the media at a café in Gangnam, Seoul, and expressed his feelings about the ending of the JTBC weekend drama 'Doctor Cha.'
Playing the role of Roy Kim, a doctor adopted by American parents, Min Woo Hyuk garnered significant love from viewers. He portrayed a supportive character, assisting Cha Jung Sook (played by Uhm Jung Hwa), a first-year resident in her 40s. Many viewers were intrigued by the romantic storyline between Cha Jeong Suk and Roy Kim and supported the two characters, especially after the pain caused by her husband's affair and illegitimate child.
Reflecting on his character's development, Min Woo Hyuk shared his initial concerns regarding Roy's emotions towards Cha Jung Sook. He questioned whether it was love, sympathy, or due to Roy's longing for a family. He shared, "I was contemplating when I first decided on Roy's character. I wondered if the feelings he felt for Cha Jung Sook were love, sympathy, or because he always wanted to have a family. I think (the viewers) were able to find out in the last episode. I think it was my homework to express that. Before the ending, it seemed like love, so I think the viewers wanted Roy and Cha Jung Sook to end up with each other."
Min Woo Hyuk also delved into the background of Roy Kim, highlighting his upbringing as an orphan and the lack of love from his biological family. He elaborated, "He was an orphan and never received love. Of course, he was raised by amazing adoptive parents, but he always felt lacking. He never felt anything special about family and thought he was like everyone else, but I thought he might have wondered about his real parents after seeing Cha Jung Sook. Observing Jung Sook, who was ignored by her own family, stirred something within him. I think he saw in her a reflection of his own hidden longing. This perhaps awakened a sense of empathy within him and drove his desire to protect her."
However, the drama's ending failed to unite the romantic connection between Roy Kim and Cha Jung Sook. Although their unique bond was evident, Cha Jung Sook concluded that she couldn't picture herself with him and encouraged Roy to seek out a fulfilling relationship with a deserving woman. Fast forward three years, and we find him immersed in a new relationship, radiating happiness and contentment.
When asked about his thoughts on the ending, Min Woo Hyuk responded with laughter, expressing his disdain by saying, "I hated it so much!" He further revealed, "The director completed the final editing of episode 16, but he expressed deep remorse toward Roy as well."
Min Woo Hyuk shared that he desired for Roy to maintain a friendship with Cha Jung Sook or return to the United States to reunite with his adoptive parents, who had raised him as their own. He wished for the storyline to emphasize the significance of finding true family bonds, a sentiment that was understood by the director but left him frustrated and elicited laughter.
Min Woo Hyuk admitted, "In all honesty, I didn't want to film it," about the scene where Roy ends up with another woman three years later.
Regarding the viewers' reaction to the ending, Min Woo Hyuk smirked and stated, "I won't seek a particular reaction. I just want everyone to enjoy it."
Yeah I didn't like his ending either. It should've been like what he said on how it should've ended
