The pseudo-religious organization, 'The Baby Garden,' demanded Netflix headquarters for 300 million KRW (~231,496 USD) in damages.
Previously, Kim Ki Soon, the head of The Baby Garden cult, applied for an injunction to ban broadcasting against MBC, producer Jo Sung Hyun, and Netflix Korea, which produced the Netflix documentary 'In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal.' A day later, the application for a provisional injunction against Netflix Korea was withdrawn, but a day later, the pseudo-religious organization filed a lawsuit against Netflix headquarters in the United States for 300 million KRW.
On March 24, the 50th Division of Civil Agreement of the Seoul Central District Court held an interrogation for a provisional injunction against broadcasting filed by The Baby Garden and the head of the church, Kim Ki Soon, against PD Jo Sung Hyun, who directed the Netflix documentary 'In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal' and MBC, the production company for the docuseries. The organization claimed, "Kim Ki Soon, the head of the church, has already been acquitted by the court on charges such as murder and fraud in 1997."
MBC's representative explained, "The documentary 'In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal' was covering the story of the mother who allowed her son to die at the Baby Garden, the story of the parents who allowed the collective assault on their daughter, and the incidents in which the followers were made to work without pay. The purpose of the series was to raise awareness and wariness against how universal ethics can be distorted in the name of religion."
On this day, the judge asked the Baby Garden official, "Isn't it too late to seek an injunction against the production company MBC? It should be against Netflix." The Baby Garden side responded with, "We are requesting the submission of materials from MBC in order to seek provisions against Netflix to handle this situation." The judge finished the interrogation on this day and ordered that the deadline for submitting data is April 7.
The Baby Garden withdrew its provisional injunction against Netflix Korea because it judged that it was meaningless to file a lawsuit against Netflix Korea only because the true broadcasting rights and substantive rights related to 'In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal' are owned by Netflix's US headquarters.
