Korean users are disclosing their experience after the panic of KakaoTalk malfunctioning for over 11 hours.
As reported, the Korean messenger app was down for several hours due to a fire incident at its data center. The crash blocked all communication on the app where users rely on for everything from work to transportation. Testimonies reveal that students were unable to receive data related to their exam preparations, and elderly parents had to be contacted by phone calls.
Damages that resulted from this issue also included the leaks of private information. The app's function of users creating multiple profiles for different groups of people had gone haywire, making it visible to others who hadn't had access. The issue has caused issues for a myriad of people, including self-proclaimed adulterers and those who were forced to expose their gender and sexual identities. As the app cannot alert which multi-profiles were leaked, users allegedly have to find out for themselves, which is "not a viable" option.
Effects also included that people found themselves "having to text without KakaoTalk emoticons uncomfortable" and that work has "slowed down" a lot. Cab drivers who rely on the app with their clients experienced a 90% decrease in their day's earnings, and shops that couldn't process digital coupons through the app had to turn their customers away.
Extensive media coverage revealing the population's reliance on the app led to a certain 'wake-up call,' leading users to seek other routes, such as Naver's Line and Telegram.
"Feels like I've gone back to my 2G network days," some shared.
Meanwhile, in K-pop, 'silent' group chats were bombarded with photos after the resume, and private messages with idols via Bubble also included talks of this incident. Hilariously, netizens noted how EXO's Kai "didn't even know that KakaoTalk was down," which some fans were able to relate to.
Reactions include:
"I had my multi-profile hidden from my mother-in-law and I guess now she knows that our family unit has gone on a trip without her..."
"Looks like there will be an increase in divorces/break-ups due to this incident"
"This is really the worst"
"This just show that if a war breaks out and there is no electricity, literally everyone is going to be disoriented"
"I actually like life without Kakao. No more forced group chats..."
"Why don't we all consider deleting Kakao from now on"
"I actually wasn't that uncomfortable but I guess this just shows who relies on it more than others"
"Their stocks are gonna go down"
"...and elderly parents had to be contacted by phone calls."
That's really tough. I can't imagine having to contact someone by phone calls.
