TOMORROW x TOGETHER's B-Sides that You Should Listen to

AKP STAFF

Probably among the hottest fourth-generation idol groups, TOMORROW x TOGETHER, or TXT, is a five-member group with equally talented and charming members, Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Hueningkai who debuted in 2019. Their songs are highly reminiscent of growth, from their debut showcasing a creative expression of growing pains to the recent songs embracing other aspects of their lives as they grow, such as friendship and love.

Their indispensable discography has completely perfect tracks, no matter what they may be, a title track, a single, a drama or anime OST, or the B-sides along their albums. Their flawless discography is recognized not only among fans but critics as well, and being the fastest K-Pop boy group to hit two billion streams on a major music streaming platform, Spotify. It is a tough choice to choose several among all of their B-sides, but here are some of their B-sides that you should listen to if you're a casual fan and end up stanning them and becoming a MOA yourself!

"Blue Orangeade"

Album: The Dream Chapter: STAR

"Blue Orangeade" is the first track of their debut album, "The Dream Chapter: STAR." The track is filled with witty references to express the main message of the song, which is a blossoming relationship despite apparent differences, such as the morning and the evening, their preferences in rappers and pets, but even more the poles of the magnet which attract each other greater when placed towards the opposite pole. The main theme is also highly evident from the song title, using the colors blue and orange, which are complementary colors defined to create the strongest contrast whenever placed together.

"Cat & Dog"
Album: The Dream Chapter: STAR

The fourth track of the album, "Cat & Dog," boasts a highly addictive melody and lyrics that proved itself years even more after its actual release, gaining attention for its rap and the realistic dog barks (which Yeonjun apparently recorded himself) that supported the track. Despite its seemingly immature nature, it is also cute at the same time as it references how pets are usually alongside the people they are with, just like the relationship of TXT with their beloved fans.

"Nap of the Star"
Album: The Dream Chapter: STAR

"Nap of the Star" is the album's fifth and last track, this time in the ballad genre, coated with the golden voices of all the members and probably the lore of the TXT Universe, the origin of the fictional storyline which happens in an alternative universe. But aside from its function as a backbone in the storyline, the song is very emotional, highlighted by the yearning despite other circumstances.

"Magic Island"
Album: The Dream Chapter: MAGIC

Yet another song that intricately supports the storyline of the TXT Universe, and also the sixth track of TXT's debut studio album, "The Dream Chapter: MAGIC," "Magic Island" unfolds the magical journey the boys delve into, sharing the emotions and pains that arise during their growth. While the track is written alongside various references to the storyline, the lyrics can also stand alone, referencing the magic island as the place where their journey started, a place that they should never forget.

"20 cm"
Album: The Dream Chapter: MAGIC

Probably among the most heart-fluttering songs in TXT's discography, "20 cm", the album's seventh track, tells a story of a blooming love, the song title referencing how they grew in height as the years passed, together with their feelings which grew alongside it. Every lyric feels like a courtship song, from the small reminiscing of their childhood memories together, to the moment they now realize that they no longer view them just as a friend, until the moment they would like to bridge the gaps toward each other.

"Angel or Devil"
Album: The Dream Chapter: MAGIC

"Angel or Devil," the album's eighth and last track, is an energetic song that depicts inner turmoil, a reference to the fighting voices of the angel and the devil. The song focuses on the inner struggle they experience as they consider whether to admit their feelings or not, a fight between what is illustrated as a talk between the angel and the devil. The song also has different references, such as a reference to their song "Cat & Dog" and to the legendary quote from the movie 'Avengers: Endgame', "I love you 3000".

"Fairy of Shampoo"
Album: The Dream Chapter: ETERNITY

A remake of the hit 90's song written and sung by Light and Salt, "Fairy of the Shampoo" is the third track of the album "The Dream Chapter: ETERNITY." The song was reinterpreted into TXT's style, now even made better with Yeonjun's participation in writing his rap part to incorporate their unique style while including the city pop vibe. Their voices are also an absolute delight, not to mention the very smooth choreography that comes with their performance.

"Maze in the Mirror"
Album: The Dream Chapter: ETERNITY

Following "Fairy of Shampoo," the album's fourth track is an extraordinary track, which is their first official release that has been co-written by all five members, and Beomgyu also participated as the song's producer. The song included the core of the togetherness of TXT, memories dating back to their cutthroat trainee days up until their debut. Beomgyu explained the title as the experience they had due to pressure when they were training hard, that they started to see somebody else in the mirrors, seemingly trapped in a maze. The very raw emotions are evident in its lyrics, from the small pleads of not giving up and trying to find themselves from being lost.

"PUMA"
Album: The Dream Chapter: ETERNITY

"PUMA" is the fifth track of the album "The Dream Chapter: ETERNITY," standing out among others due to its powerful beat and message. While the concept can be foreign to some, they sing about taking on a brand new realm despite initial hesitation, taking the leap of faith, and hoping to escape the shackles and reach their dreams. But of course, they also know that despite freedom, there is an equally large danger in front of them, which they have to face if they want to survive.

"Eternally"
Album: The Dream Chapter: ETERNITY

Following "Magic Island" of the earlier album, "Eternally," the sixth and final track of the album, also binds itself to the alternative storyline of the TXT Universe, and probably the most heartbreaking among them too. It is also highly famous for being the first TXT song to have an unexpected genre switch in song, from a starting acoustic melody to shifting darker beats, which is not so frequently seen in other idol's discographies too. The song is also bound to the title track, "Can't You See Me," referencing the moment of facing fire as if it was an eternal nightmare.

"We Lost the Summer"

Album: Minisode 1: Blue Hour

"Minisode 1: Blue Hour" marked the end of an era, closing The Dream Chapters and probably the start of a new era of TXT. "We Lost the Summer" was the album's third track and was among the songs that were highly received among audiences with its concept, tackling the days and all that we've lost during the devastating pandemic, likening the moment of lockdown to a winter where everything seemed to remain frozen in time.

"Way Home"
Album: Minisode 1: Blue Hour

The song "Way Home" is the fifth and last track of the album, which is a reference to the commute home after school. Even though they frequently travel the same route and pass the same landscape, they occasionally become uneasy because everything around them seems strange and fantastical, like a mirage in the desert or a projection of their imagination. However, in the end, despite these circumstances and regardless of everything, as long as they continue to remember to be with each other, they can face things and run forward together.

"Anti-Romantic"

Album: The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE

Another TXT B-side that gained further attention due to various social media sites such as Twitter and TikTok, "Anti-Romantic," is the first track of "The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE," the second studio album and one of the most applauded albums in the whole TXT discography. The song is about their hurtful love for someone, and they are aware that their crush on them won't end well. They tell themselves that they will escape rather than have to confront their fear of that individual. They want to adore them but are unable to. They strive to persuade themselves that they don't even believe in love to even love the person in the first place.

"Magic"
Album: The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE

TXT's first official English song, "Magic," includes "the feel-good, classic pop sound," for which they are known, alongside the disco pop features. It is also the third track from the album, accompanied by powerful choreography with its highly addictive lyrics, saying that it is just like magic, with how one is able to thaw their frozen heart.

"No Rules"
Album: The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE

Probably known to most due to the fancam that trended due to its fun choreography, "No Rules" is the sixth track of "The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE." Four of the members participated in its songwriting, with the song featuring a reference to another B-side, "New Rules," now talking about the confusing normalization of the lack of rules they have to adhere to. They are testing uncharted waters, left behind particularly due to the pandemic, trying to face the world, particularly their industry.

"Dear Sputnik"
Album: The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE

The seventh song on the album, "Dear Sputnik," uses metaphors of an extreme connection to someone and orbits around them and references outer space in its theme. The song referenced Sputnik 1, which was the first artificial Earth satellite, and its name meant "guide" or "fellow traveler." At the beginning of "Dear Sputnik," TXT are lost, adrift in the frozen and empty space, until they find their "sputnik." With their partner, they can heal their wounds and "fly through the night sky" together. Hueningkai co-produced the song and co-written it alongside Taehyun and other songwriters.

"MOA Diary"

Album: The Chaos Chapter: FIGHT OR ESCAPE

"MOA Diary" is one of the three new tracks added to the repackaged version of "The Chaos Chapter: FIGHT OR ESCAPE." The track served as track eight of the album and was also the first official fan song of TXT to MOA, hence the title. Through the lyrics, which all of the members have participated in writing, it narrated the journey of the members together with MOAs, with several references from their other songs as seen in the choreography. It will surely make your heart swell and swear that "I'll be there, I'll be there 'til the sweeter end."

"Opening Sequence"

Album: Minisode 2: Thursday's Child

"Minisode 2: Thursday's Child", the second mini album by TXT, depicts a devastating breakup from the viewpoints of the members. In particular, the song "Opening Sequence," which is the album's first track, depicts the denial that can come immediately after a breakup. The opening sequence of a movie is used as a metaphor in this song to convey the anguish they are experiencing as they look back on their former relationship through rose-colored glasses. They keep pleading with their loved ones to stay and "take one more chance on (them)" because they can't endure the anguish any longer, but eventually, they understand "there is nothing (they) can do" and start blaming themselves. Hueningkai and Taehyun have also participated in the songwriting process of the track.

"Lonely Boy"
Album: Minisode 2: Thursday's Child

One of the two tracks that feature a unit for the first time in TXT's releases, “Lonely Boy," is a unit song consisting of Huening Kai and Yeonjun, who both have also participated in songwriting, portrays the lonely feeling and resentment one may experience after a breakup. As a metaphor for the commitment that was broken, the harsh words their ex used to "dig into (their) skin," and how the relationship and love previously felt have now lost all value as a result of their split, the song incorporates a tattoo they got on their ring finger, hence the song's subtitle. The song talks about the regret, resentment, emptiness, and loneliness they go through. Another allusion to the tattoo is when it says that the memories and footprints of their lover won't ever go.

"Thursday's Child Has Far To Go"
Album: Minisode 2: Thursday's Child

Another track that features a unit, this time a subunit of Soobin, Beomgyu, and Taehyun, who all also have participated in the songwriting process, "Thursday's Child Has Far To Go" is the fifth and last track of the album. They reference the nursery rhyme "Thursday's Child Has Far To Go" in this song to suggest that, while still having a long road to rehabilitation after a breakup on Thursday, they have a bright and happy future ahead of them. The boys talk about their split and how they used to grieve, but that eventually, a grin "blooms from (their) tears" and that they "won't cry again." They end on a positive note by saying that despite everything, they "laugh again, feeling so happy."

Here are some of the many beautiful B-sides of TXT! To be honest, the best thing to do is stream their whole discography and realize why they are among those of K-Pop groups with flawless discographies which they can boast. Which among TXT's B-sides is your favorite (and we understand if you can't choose only one), and which among the B-sides would you recommend to a casual listener who wants to become a MOA?
