Less than a year after the tragic Gwangju building collapse of 2021, South Koreans are more concerned than ever about poor, rushed construction leading to disastrous incidents.
According to media outlet reports on January 21, the fire department was called yesterday (January 20) to investigate the multipurpose complex Acro Seoul Forest, located in Seoul's Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu, after employees experienced building tremors, shifting floors, and more. Acro Seoul Forest is well-known for being the new home to SM Entertainment. The location's address is also associated with the location of KWANGYA, the universe which connects SM Entertainment artists. The building is additionally home to Hyundai Glovis Co, Socar Company, as well as several floors of luxury residential units. Celebrities known to be residents of Acro Seoul Forest include SHINee's Taemin, CNBLUE's Minhyuk, actor Lee Jae Hoon, singer Kim Dong Ryul, and more.
Back on January 20, the Seoul fire department received multiple reports that employees at 'Tower D' at Acro Seoul Forest experienced building tremors. On one online community dedicated to business company employees, anonymous workers at SM Entertainment and Hyundai Glovis listed out the following occurrences reported by building residents:
1. Tremors throughout the day (Severe enough that a computer monitor was visibly shaking.)
2. Shifting floors
3. Water leaks in the ceiling
4. Loud sounds of the elevator resisting wind
5. A lower floor window crack
Some employees at Acro Seoul Forest commented, "There have been a few light tremors here and there, but today was something else. All the employees around me were shocked with disbelief", "Those tremors we felt today were seriously concerning... I don't know if I should go to work tomorrow", "I was really scared because of how severe the tremors were today. Is this really okay?", and more.
Fire department officials who arrived on the scene on January 20 reported no major concerns. However, additional reports were filed on the morning of January 21, and the fire department will be continuing investigations with cooperation from construction officials.
A little update, other companies in the building have issued an early day finish today and also WFH arrangements and SM entertainment has already been on an optional work from home staff arrangement. Apparently acro seoul denied the claims but KBS reported that officials are going to be doing a risk check on the building. Hopefully everyone will be safe
Also just to clarify, SM did not construct the building, they don't own it either
