Keeping up with the Ssangmundong squad: Recent and upcoming projects of the 'Reply 1988' cast

There are K-dramas we enjoy watching but, once it ends, we get to move on to another one immediately. But some stay with us, and these are what we keep coming back to when we need a familiar comfort or, sometimes, a good cry. A lot of titles may have come to your mind, but we’re sure Reply 1988 is never off that list.

Aside from the incredibly relatable storytelling - thanks to Shin Wonho PD, writer Lee Woojung, and the entire crew - one of the major reasons why many of us have grown attached to this drama is because of the Ssangmundong kids. Despite stark differences in personalities, their family-like ties remain unmatched.

Because we miss the squad as much as you do, we rounded up their recent and upcoming dramas and films you should follow.

Lee Hyeri

Hyeri’s most recent drama, My Roommate is A Gumiho, had just aired its final episode last July 15, 2021. The rom-com series was highly talked about because of Shin Woo Yeo (Jang Ki-yong) and Lee Dam’s (Lee Hyeri) lovely pairing, plus Go Kyung Pyo’s cameo!

She has been working on When Flowers Bloom, I Think of the Moon since May 2021 with lead actor Yoo Seung Ho (I’m Not A Robot). The historical drama is set to air in the latter half of 2021.

Park Bogum

Park Bogum already started his military enlistment last August 31, 2020, but if you miss watching him on-screen, check out his 2021 sci-fi film Seo Bok (with Goblin’s Gong Yoo) and buzzworthy series Record of Youth which ended on October 27, 2020. Hyeri made an appearance in an episode and drove Deoksun-Taek fans crazy!

Another movie he completed before fulfilling mandatory service is Wonderland (with Bae Suzy, Choi Woo-Shik), which is scheduled for release in late 2021.

Ryu Jun Yeol

Making his highly-anticipated comeback in the K-drama scene, Ryu Jun Yeol takes on the role of Kang Jae in the upcoming JTBC series Lost. Joined by actress Jeon Do Yeon, it tells the story of ordinary people leading tired and empty lives.

He will also frontline Choi Dong-hoon’s two-part film Alien with stellar actors Kim Tae Ri (The Handmaiden, Mr. Sunshine) and Kim Woo Bin (The Heirs, Uncontrollably Fond). It seems like we’ll be seeing more of Ryu Jun Yeol this year, as the expected premiere date is also late 2021!

Go Kyung Pyo

Fresh from his military service discharge last January 15, 2020, Go Kyung Pyo signaled his return through the 2020 K-drama Private Lives with Girls’ Generation Seohyun. Though it already finished last November, fans are hungover on the leads’ chemistry on and off-screen.

Last June, Netflix confirmed the production of action blockbuster Seoul Vibe, where Go Kyung Pyo will reunite with Chicago Typewriter co-actor Yoo Ah In. He is also part of Decision to Leave, an upcoming project of Oldboy director Park Chan-wook.

Lee Dong Hwi

Lee Dong Hwi opened this year with New Year Blues, a rom-com film with a golden ensemble including Yoo Yeon Seok, Yoo In Na, and Girls’ Generation Sooyoung. He will also join the cast of Netflix’s Glitch as Lee Si Guk, boyfriend of the main character Hong Ji-Hyo (Jeon Yeo Bin).

Our Dong Ryong is also living his dreams now as a singer through project group MSG Wannabe which was formed in the variety show Hangout With Yoo. Their songs had been topping charts recently, and Ssangmundong couldn’t be any prouder!
