1. Come Back Home by 2NE1
2NE1's "Come Back Home" is one of their most powerful and memorable singles to date. Not only that, the track also boasts the most unique song composition the group has ever put forward. The song utilizes several genres of music and pulls from different aspects of these genres to achieve a characteristically 2NE1 sound. From reggae to dubstep to the electronic hook, the song seems like a hodgepodge, but ultimately ends up coming together perfectly.
2. Ko Ko Bop by EXO
EXO's "Ko Ko Bop" quickly caught on and became a viral hit given the snappy dance moves, however the song's unique composition can also be noted! A number of netizens pointed out the high pitch frequency of the drop that gave it its electronic and edgy sound. Produced by Styalz Fuego, "Ko Ko Bop" was originally intended for a female group as an energetic reggae song 3 semitones higher.
3. Gashina - SUNMI
SUNMI's "Gashina" was a huge end of summer anthem and for good reason! "Gashina" was written by Teddy Park, Sunmi, Joe Rhee, and 24 to be a dancehall synth-pop song that still is distinctly "Eastern-influenced". Not only that, the four made sure that bass was a distinct factor in the musical composition of the track.
4. Kingdom Come by Red Velvet
Red Velvet's "Kingdom Come" is an incredible R&B song that differs from Red Velvet's normal dancier vibes. "Kingdom Come" boasts an instrumental with a gentle and slower BPM. With a softer melody, Lee Seuran, the writer of the song, was able to use Red Velvet's signature vocal layers to his advantage.
5. Aurora by Jonghyun
With a very nostalgic vibe, "Aurora" by Jonghyun is another track that boasts incredibly interesting song composition. The song seems to stay at a semi-stagnant vocal arrange until about a minute into the track where Jonghyun does his signature vocal riffs. Deez also adds his spin on the musical arrangement for "Aurora". The 90s inspired album this track is on was promoted with Jonghyun wearing a number of 90s inspired outfits.
6. Hi~ by Lovelyz
Lovelyz is a group that is able to retain the basics of pop but change up the instrumental styles of their tracks. In fact, for their song, "Hi~," the strings on the instrumental make up an orchestra that's very unique to the sound of the song. "Hi~" also boasts a number of lovely harmonies over an up-and-down melody. Lovelyz "Hi~" is a track to listen to with studio grade headphones if you have 'em!
7. The 7th Sense - NCT U
NCT U's "The 7th Sense" rounds out our list as another top hit with intriguing song composition! In addition to the melodic beat and rhythmic nature of the song, there is a hefty amount of added sound effects to round out the group's signature edgy vibe. If you listen to "The 7th Sense" with a nice pair of headphones, you'll notice the equalization levels to be a bit louder on the instrumental side, something that isn't common in K-Pop.
