1. Blend of the traditional and the modern
South Korea is a beautiful blend of tradition and modern architecture. Seoul boasts its tall high-rises but this city is sure to not forget its cultural roots. Seoul is still peppered with sites of hanoks (the traditional Korean house) and has preserved the palaces in the city.
2. Hanok
If Seoul was only a hub of modernized skyscrapers, it would lose most of its charm but many locations, like Insa-dong, help preserve the Hanok by customizing their restaurants, shops, and businesses to adhere to this traditional structure, creating small bursts of tradition in the busiest parts of town.
3. Wicked fast Internet
South Korea also has the fastest average Internet connection in the world and everyone is always plugged in. The Internet connection is always so prime that people can stream videos without delays and pauses on subways, buses, and on the streets.
4. K-pop Mecca
The city that gave birth to K-pop, it's only fitting that throughout Seoul, there are a load of sites to quell any avid fan's hunger for everything that is K-pop, whether it's visiting your favorite idol-run business, like Big Bang Seungri's Ramen store, or stopping by the famous SMTOWN coexartium, which is rumored to be a K-pop Disney land for any SMTOWN fan, or catching a K-pop Hologram Concert at the LOTTE FitIn Dongdaemun Store, Seoul is definitely the Mecca for all things K-pop.
5. Superior Subway System
The subway transportation in Seoul is what you wished every subway station was like in the United States (that is if your city even has public transportation): clean, organized, and on time. Getting around on public transportation in South Korea seems like a dream with its English, Chinese, and Japanese translations, bringing you to your destination, easily and smoothly.
6. Heated Floors
One of the gems of South Korea is the heated floors. During the colder days, whether it's an apartment or a house, the floors become toasty warm with the heat, creating a glorious cozy experience for the feet in the freezing negative degree winters.
7. BEST FOOD
The foodie scene is wild in South Korea. Everyone is a food blogger or food Instagrammer and for good reason. South Korea has got the best of everything, the street food, themed cafes, creative restaurants, and traditional markets create an absolutely huge range of all tastes, ready to be savored and devoured. It's always a plus that the food cost in Korea is cheap too!
8. Hiking
Going hiking is an extremely popular hobby in Korea. The mountainous terrain of the county provides beautiful nature moments during all months of the year. And the best part is finishing up the hike by grabbing a cup of rice wine (makgulli) on the way down.
9. The Art scene
The art scene, especially the contemporary art scene, is blooming in Korea. Korea's art scene is the perfect mixture of contemporary art, fashion, and design. Museums host the biggest names in the art scene like Nam June Paik, Yayoi Kusama, or Anish Kapoor, and Insa-dong, Samcheong-dong, and Hongdae are filled with galleries and emerging local and international talent.
10. Never ending nightlife
Seoul is actually the city that never sleeps. Bars are open 24/7, restaurants are open 24/7, clubs close at 6 AM, it's a city that shines just as brightly at night as it does in the morning. Plus add in the endless amounts of karaoke, and soju, there is never a dull moment at Seoul, even in the wee hours of the morning.
11. Convenience Stores
It takes a lot for convenience stores to make it onto a list of reasons why a city is the best, but the South Korean ones aren't just your average convenience stores. Think of these as mini Walmarts or the highest quality mini-groceries, stocking everything needed in an urgent moment and these stores are literally on every block, scratch that, there are multiple on each block. Some people in Korea live off solely these stores and I even wonder if South Korea would function at all without these convenience stores, that's how good quality they are.
12. Themed cafes
From art cafes to cat and dog cafes, to the Sherlock themed café, to the cereal café, to the animation cafés, to the poop-themed café, hello kitty café, Seoul is the hub for themed cafes. There's even a café where there are two sheep roaming for guests to pet!
