The storyline of an upcoming film set to premiere in 2018, titled 'Wrestler', is garnering negative attention from Korean netizens as another occurrence of a romantic plot involving a drastic age-gap.
'Wrestlers' was formerly known by its working title 'Love Sling' and stars Yoo Hae Jin, Kim Min Jae, Lee Sung Kyung, Na Moon Hee, Sung Dong Il, and more. The film will be a romantic comedy about a former wrestler/single father (Yoo Hae Jin) whose son is everything to him, and a son (Kim Min Jae) who strives to become the top wrestler for his father. The father and son one day become entangled with a female friend (Lee Sung Kyung) whom the son has a crush on, but the girl falls in love with the father.
'Wrestlers' wrapped up filming with its cast and crew this past October 17, and will premiere in theaters in the former half of 2018. Netizens' negative reactions to the film's storyline has become a hot topic recently, due to the controversy around tvN drama 'My Mister', set to premiere in 2018 also.
As with the negative reaction IU and Lee Sun Kyun of 'My Mister' received for their possible 18-year age gap romance, many netizens find a potential romance between Yoo Hae Jin and Lee Sung Kyung inappropriate, and commented, "Are they crazy", "Why are there all these sad love stories about an old man and a young woman..?", "This is a waste of the actors", "If this story is aiming for this in a narrative aspect, then there should also be stories about an older woman and a young boy", "Did the actors read the script before they agreed to do it..?", and more.
