Here are the details of the EXO fans' argument:
First, 'Best Album of the Year' is calculated by 70% music score and 30% fan votes, according to MelOn Music website.
And the 70% -- music score is broken down into 40% streaming and 60% downloads -- which Melon calls 'Trend Chart':
According to EXO fans, EXO has topped this 'Trend Chart' consistently, and the group has almost always ranked higher than BTS during time period where MelOn says the scores were calculated. Below is the comparative ranking on Trend Chart between EXO and BTS:
What about the fan votes? EXO supporters say that the group was winning in this category as well. Following is the screen shot of the MelOn Music Awards voting page on November 19 when the voting was closed:
EXO has earned 46% of the votes and BTS has 34%, a 12% difference -- over 310,000 votes.
Understandably, many EXO fans are outraged by this seemingly unjust situation. However, BTS fans claim that they have evidence that the award went to the right person.
Here is an audio of MelOn customer care employee and a fan (supposedly EXO fan) who had a conversation about the scores between the two groups:
The conversation boils down to the Melon employee saying that the company's internal data says that BTS scored higher than EXO in the past year. He says that because the data is internal, it cannot be released to the public, but insists that there is no problem in the calculation because BTS was streamed more than EXO.
What do you guys think about the two sides of the argument? Should EXO have won the Best Album of the Year?
