During the press conference for the drama, held on November 5 in Seoul's Yeongdeungpo District, Shin Won Ho opened up about the choice of casting, saying, "I know there are concerns about the casting of Hyeri."

The producer explained, "To be honest, around the time we decided to make 'Reply 1988,' we developed a character around Hyeri. Of course, I didn't see much of her acting but saw her a lot through variety and other programs. She seemed like a great fit for Sung Duk Sun's role. But in the midst [of deciding the casting], Hyeri became too popular. So we were going to give up on casting her as we thought she wouldn't be the right fit anymore."
He continued, "But when I see Hyeri's acting, I think that she is adapting well to the role. When you meet her, Hyeri is very charismatic and she has the appeal of pulling people in. It's very satisfying that she shows more natural [acting] than being formulaic. I'm very satisfied with casting Hyeri. She is trying her best and I'm sure that she will exceed everyone's expectations," putting complete faith in Hyeri's acting skills.
