According to a recent report on CNN, Kim Ryon Hui actually lived a relatively upscale life while she was in North Korea. However, with the lack of proper medicine and healthcare in North Korea, she had no choice but to cross the borders to China due to her medical condition. Staggering medical bills and low wages in China were ultimately what made Kim leave for South Korea.
She said, "I was thinking of recovering completely before returning to my aging parents. I wanted to return home in a healthy state. So I said I will go to South Korea for two months and earn the money and get myself treated."
Not realizing that once she had signed papers renouncing her North Korean citizenship that she would not be able to go back home, Kim continued on her regretful journey towards South Korea.
Once she found herself in South Korea, Kim Ryon Hui admitted that she attempted to go back to her motherland several times. She revealed that she had tried to find a smuggler, made repeated calls to the North Korean consulate, and even turned herself into the police, lying that she is a spy from North Korea in hopes of being deported back to North Korea.
Little did she know, South Korean government does not deport North Korean spies back and instead Kim Ryon Hui was sentenced to two years for passport fraud and espionage.
Today, Kim Ryon Hui is residing in Daegu, South Korea, regretting the moment she decided to make her way over to China and then South Korea.
She told CNN, "The wrong choice that I made, my choice of wanting to earn money for my treatment, led to to the worst situation in my life. I am regretting with my heart and I am so sorry that I've brought such suffering to my aging parents and husband and my daughter."
