Suzy announced on a broadcast the day before the games, "This contest is not just about sports, but it's being prepared as an event that shares cultures and youth. I hope that through this event South Korea will affirm its status and that Gwangju will be known as an international sports city. The City of Gwangju invites all of you to the diverse sports festival infused with nature, culture, and IT."
'Gwangju Summer Universiade Games' is a "multi-sport event for all university students around the world," as stated on the festival's official website. This year's games is the 28th 'Gwangju Summer Universiade Games,' and it will see participation from 148 nations with a total of 13,000 teams. The South Korean team includes a total of 553 members, Russian team 927, Japanese team 679, Chinese team 611, and American team 605, which make the top five countries with the greatest number of participants.
