The Korea Music Copyright Association responded and starting in April they have changed the royalty payments from inclusion payments to a per song payment system.
A representative from the association explained, "Originally, we would calculate the percentage of the ratio between the songs that the association was managing from the total number of songs that MelOn or other distribution companies have and calculate the revenue from that. It would be calculated from the ratio of the songs that we manage. Now that the system has changed, we would divide the total amount after seeing what each organization is managing and their rights to the song."
Basically, the change in the payment system will help artists to receive a more accurate payment per song and increase transparency in which songs are making revenue. While the original system failed to give proper report on the total revenue, before the distribution of payment, for composers, the new system is expected to bring some clarity by calculating individual songs.
Meanwhile, the Korea Music Copyright Association has also vowed to pay the outstanding amounts of royalties from streaming services to artists who failed to receive the full amounts after the issue was brought to light by Gary and Mad Clown in January 2015.
