Hyosung vs G.NA vs Jiyeon: Which Duble Sidekick diva did you like the most?

AKP STAFF
SECRET, Hyosung, T-ara, Jiyeon, G.NA, Duble Sidekick
We have a lot of female soloists out right now, but HyosungG.NA, and Jiyeon share a unique relationship - all three of them are sexy divas performing songs by the talented Duble Sidekick!

The three talented divas all bring something new to the table, but whose release did you enjoy the most?

See a summary below and decide for yourself which comeback was the best for you!

Concept

Hyosung didn't really surprise anyone when she came out with her tomboyishly sexy image teasers. She did have one teaser photo that looked innocent instead, but her overall concept for her comeback is not too far off from the image she's built within SECRET. She pulls off the concept wonderfully, but some have argued that her solo debut was a chance for her to try something different but she seems to have chosen the safe bet.

G.NA stuck with her trademark sexy-and-cute style. As usual, she has a bright, happy image to go with her upbeat, cheerful song, donning cute dresses and bright colors for the comeback. She initially tricked us into thinking this might be a true sexy concept with her initial teaser photos and the title of her song, but her overall image turned out to be her tried-and-true happy girl image with flashes of sexy.

Jiyeon's concept probably didn't catch anyone off guard as well, not only because she had continued to hint at the sexy image, but also because of her image within T-ara. Even though T-ara has done a lot of bright, cute songs, Jiyeon's image for the group is usually about pulling off a sexiness mature for her age. Jiyeon does it again through her solo debut, and maybe takes it a step further.

All three of these gorgeous ladies didn't do a complete 180 in terms of their concept and image, but all of them knew what works for them and went with it on a more upgraded level. As this is a solo debut for both Hyosung and Jiyeon, they especially might not have wanted to take a complete risk for their first ever solo work. In terms of concept, the girls are pretty much tied for me.

MV

Hyosung's MV is K-pop's standard: a bit of story, a lot of dancing, and the seemingly mandatory butt and cleavage shots that come with sexy concepts. She does go through 11 different outfits in the MV, and most of them accentuate her body figure very nicely. Her MV plot doesn't seem to have too much to do with the song lyrics itself (but then again, not many K-pop MVs do...). Frankly for me, I think it could have benefit from a more variety of shots than the ones used on bringing focus to her cleavage, but I think it's still fun to watch for her choreo and just seeing Hyosung work the performance.

G.NA's MV is another K-pop standard: a bit of plot, a lot of choreo, a cute yet sexy appeal, and a.. bit of weirdness. It's about her playing around with girls and finding outfits for a party. It actually matches with her lyrics. The only problem I have with G.NA's seemingly harmless video is the part in which we saw a guy peeking through her dressing room - I thought that was just creepy and didn't seem to go along with this upbeat bubbly song, but at least they don't show what he does with her panties afterwards?

Jiyeon has the most artistic MV out of the trio, which isn't a surprise as Core Contents Media is pretty well known for their high quality MVs. It combines both Jiyeon's sexiness and her bright innocence, just like her concept. The MV has a bit of stop motion to it, and although it might make the MV a little hard on the eyes with all the jerking, it still brings a unique quality. Not only that, this is the MV that has the most plot line out of the three MVs (it even has a plot twist at the end).

~

Although the three MVs use basically the same formula (small plot + choreography shots), Jiyeon brings the highest quality MV to the mix for me. G.NA's and Hyosung's are nice to watch as well, and the lack of constant jerking on the screen means it's easier on the eyes. Still, Jiyeon wins the MV round for me.

Song

Hyosung's song samples the lullaby "Hush Little Baby, Don't You Cry", and the lyrics are actually quite sweet. Unlike what the concept or the MV might suggest, the song talks about sharing a sweet kiss with a lover. The chorus of the song is super catchy, and the song's quirkiness gets listeners listening over and over again.

G.NA's song doesn't pull any weird tricks or fancy stunts. It's a happy, bright song without anything to pull it down, but its lack of quirks is also its biggest fault. The song is nice to listen to and easy on the ears, but it gets repetitive and generic pretty fast.

Jiyeon's song is a quiet song that feels like it's whispered more than it's sung. Just like G.NA's song, it doesn't really have any quirks to it - it's a nice and more sensual song, but like G.NA's, it can get generic fast. However, the chorus is made more memorable with the repetition of "Never, ever".

~

All three are Duble Sidekick songs, but all three have pretty different feels to them. Personally, Hyosung's song wins this round for me - it's the song that's the most fun to listen to for me. It's catchy and has enough quirks to make it interesting, but not too much that it puts you off.

Choreography

The biggest disappointment with Hyosung's choreography is that she has two dance breaks with her song, but she doesn't seem to take the opportunity to really show off her skills as she does the same thing over and over for both. She's an amazing dancer with a lot to show off, but her choreography seems to want to emphasize her body instead of her talents. But overall, it's still a sexy dance that she pulls off very well.

G.NA's choreography, much like her song, is cute but doesn't really bring anything new to the stage. In terms of difficulty, although it's easier than the other girls', it's got a higher probability of catching on. Plus, no one dislikes a cute, fun choreography.

Jiyeon is the only one out of the three that uses a lot of props. She has the back wall, the frame, and chair - plus, she uses her jacket during her chorus. It's a sexy, mature choreography, but there is one problem - it's that her dancers kind of outshine her at some points. Her duet segment with the 'mirror' is with her own dance teacher and the leader of a dance crew, so it can't be helped. There is another segment in which she's on the wall but not in the center, rather off to the side; that also can't be helped because she has to interact with the dancers behind the wall. Hopefully, with differentiated stage outfits, that can be fixed.

~

Even though I personally wanted to see a lot more from Hyosung, she has the best choreography here in my opinion. It isn't surprising because she could be considered the best dancer of the three. But Jiyeon comes a very close second, and I really like how her choreography is incredibly dynamic and has her moving all across the stage, filling out the empty space where the T-ara members would normally be. G.NA is a great dancer as well, but she's more about showing off her vocals than dance moves for this song, so her cute but uncomplicated moves work perfectly for her as well.

Overall, all three girls have captured what they do best, and it's obvious that they've prepared a lot for this comeback or solo debut.
