ANGEL EYES EPISODE 12
In this episode, on the heels of Soo Wan accepting Dong Joo's marriage proposal, Young Ji's plans come to fruition, and things start to fall apart.
Woo Chul and Min Soo are redirected from their efforts by the Chief of Police, who told Young Ji that he would "take care of them." Woo Chul is offered a security guard position in the mountains, and Min Soo is reassigned to the Traffic Department. Woo Chul admits there's something he's doing right now, but it will be wrapped up in 3 months; he'll go at that time. Woo Chul's no dummy -- he knows why this offer popped up. The Chief even reveals his motive: quit investigating hit and runs and live in the here and now. The Chief has far more power over Min Soo than he does over Woo Chul, so the reassignment will hamper her effectiveness nicely. He can simply deflect her protests and keep her where she can do the least amount of harm. Woo Chul goes to a junkyard looking for the car that Young Ji scrapped, certain it's the one involved in the hit and run. Before he can get in, he is clubbed from behind by a mysterious assailant.
In one of this episode's cuter moments, Teddy meets with Ellie to repair the relationship between Jin Mo and his father. If Woon Chan will not go to Jin Mo's class, Jin Mo's class will come to Woon Chan. There are adorable scenes of the firemen playing with Jin Mo's class, and they serve to offset the rather grim turn of events that darken this installment.
Half of episode 12 is spent with Dong Joo as he investigates what Dr. Choi tells him regarding Director Yoon and the death of Dong Joo's mother. From his initial meeting with Dr. Choi to the final one, he looks troubled each step of the way . He looks over medical records that Dr. Choi gives him, and notes the consulting physician. He interviews another doctor that was there at the time. He rebuffs Soo Wan's attempts to cheer him up, and is colder to her in his single-minded devotion to get to the truth. He even meets again with Dr. Choi, saying that he cannot accept the truth. Dr. Choi reassures him that it is the truth. Dong Joo checks the vitals on his mother, and how they suddenly shifted from good to bad. He becomes feverish, and collapses in Soo Wan's arms. She nurses him back to health, and finally, he knows what he must do. He talks to Dr. Choi, tells him he needs to stop, and appears before Director Yoon to inform him that they must talk.
Soo Wan is on cloud nine because of the rock on her finger. She regards the ring as she walks along, idly playing with it. She stops in a store window and looks at a wedding dress there, imagining the possibilities and smiling. She also feels down as Dong Joo is more and more consumed with finding out the truth about his mother's death. She becomes concerned when Dong Joo does not show up for work. She also tries her best to comfort him and be understanding when he shuts down and becomes unresponsive. I've heard plenty of buzz trashing Goo Hye Sun's acting abilities, and I have to say... watching this, I cannot imagine why. She does well in every scene.
Young Ji has her agents do their work. Dr. Choi reports to Young Ji during this time. He has been covertly observing Dong Joo both before and after he delivered the news. Dr. Choi tells her there's no reason for him to suspect anything. She simply tells him to keep an eye on Dong Joo and to report everything. She gets a call, presumably regarding Woo Chul, saying they disabled his arms. I knew Young Ji was capable of a lot, but come on, thuggish violence? The lack of emotion on her face indicates that she's a sociopath with a very low empathy for others' pain. How far will she go to protect her interests?
This episode is more makjang ("overdramatic and ridiculous") than most. Scenes of Dong Joo crying over his mother, then later being feverish and barely alive tug at the heartstrings. He eventually finds his way to Soo Wan, and draws strength from her love. This is a Dong Joo like we've never seen: driven, dragged along by his emotions, unleashing a rage that wells up in him when he talks to Dr. Choi for the final time this episode.
What relationship does the Chief of Police have with Young Ji? Is this a case of money speaks? Or does she have something on him that she can blackmail him with? How many informants does she have? Early on in the series, she and her son casually mention them like they were simply a fact of life. Ji Woon is seemingly quite used to her scheming. Is he likely to find out about all this? And how will he react when he does?
This series has started to move quite rapidly. It had just established a comfortable pace, then they introduce an episode that throws everything out of whack. My only contention is that I can't wait for the next episode, and have to wait a week like everyone else.
