Ranking the sexy girl groups of January: AoA, Girl's Day, Dal Shabet, and Rainbow BLAXX!

AOA, Dal Shabet, Girl

Many girl groups decided to kick off the new year by turning a new leaf and returning with a very sexy concept, shedding all of their typical cuteness for a very mature and feminine image.  With the first month of 2014 now over and January being completely packed with these shocking comebacks, we decided to rank the four girl groups (AoA - "Miniskirt," Girl's Day - "Something," Dal Shabet - "B.B.B," and Rainbow BLAXX - "Cha Cha") in different categories to see which groups did the best when it came to performance, music, music video, and outfits.  After all, they all might have gone for the sexy concept, but they did not take the same path whatsoever.

Performance

written by joy-k

My least favorite has to be AOA's "Miniskirt."  Out of the four performances, I would say they were the least polished—perhaps due to the fact that they are the newest group of the four.  The butt shake during the chorus is the point choreography, but it is not catchy enough to linger or set itself apart from most other K-pop sexy dances.  Overall, the performance looks a bit awkward in my opinion, especially for the moves when they're bent over.

Next is Dal Shabet—the "you dance" (in which they walk and do a point motion) and the boob dance (similar to the one in Girl's Day's "Expectation") are entertaining, but the choreography, again, falls short of being one that the viewers absolutely have to perform when singing "B.B.B" at karaoke, which is why I put it in 3rd place.

BLAXX, Rainbow's new subunit, really upped the sexy level with their song "Cha Cha."  While the performance is a little too sexy for me, you can always count on Rainbow (BLAXX) to have one dance that really stands out: the "ab" dance in their track "A" and now the "whip dance" in their latest track.  Overall, I enjoyed their performance, placing it in second.

In first place is Girl's Day with "Something."  Whether you like the "provoking dance," in which they swipe their skirt to the side and flash their thighs, or not, it is extremely catchy—it is definitely a move that sticks out from the choreography.  I think that with the combination of their unique outfits (which are always on point with all Girl's Day performances) and dance that sync well together, you could say that Girl's Day is on top of the "sexy concept" game.

Music

After repeated listens I have to opine that Girl's Day's "Something" is particularly stellar in all elements—lyrics, melody, and vocals. The lyrics speak of love lost, but thankfully doesn't suffer from being too florid or overrun with clichés. I will simply say that the mix of synths, drums, and the occasional clinking of some unknown instrument all come together smoothly. Also, the barely audible claps heard throughout the song are a nice touch; at first listen, they reminded me vaguely of Uhm Jung Hwa's "Invitation." Moreover "Something" contains the most diversified set of vocal layers, from teetering falsettos to high notes delivered with perfect control.

AoA's "Miniskirt" places closely at second, although I was seriously deliberating whether I should honor Dal Shabet with this ranking instead. However after continuously listening to both songs, I found "Miniskirt" consistently catchier throughout than "B.B.B." "Miniskirt" is awfully addictive, a pop take on big band with traces of woodwind and other jazz instruments.

In third place is Dal Shabet with their single "B.B.B." I fell in love at first listen, especially when I heard the refrain in the beginning. It instantly reminded me of disco music and T-ara's "Roly Poly," which is another song I find incredibly catchy. It is a high-powered, high-energy, just a high-everything song, good for pumping you up and getting you animated.

The fourth and final place is awarded to Rainbow BLAXX and their song "Cha Cha." Unfortunately this is the song that I found myself skipping every time I had all four songs on repeat. It just does not possess that "wow" factor for me. I was hoping the song would pick up at the chorus but I did not hear the entrance of any new instruments—aside from the electric guitar in the background that strums the same chord over and over again. Furthermore, the vocal range does not impress me, whereas "Something" or even "Miniskirt" was able to make my jaw drop.

Music Videos

Each and every one of the girls in these videos is gorgeous. That goes without saying. However, the tone of each of these videos is different. Dal Shabet's "B.B.B." is certainly watchable and well packaged. But the girls seem less accessible in this MV than in the others. I almost felt like I was watching a video fashion catalog. By contrast, it feels like AoA is right next to me, perhaps because their video is not as effects laden as Dal Shabet's. The bedroom scenes and soft light are used to great effect in "Miniskirt."  I'm a big fan of Rainbow, but I don't like the MV for "Cha Cha" at all.  Not the best showing for the sub-unit BLAXX. Obviously set in a bordello, it was too blatant, and a whorehouse is not sexy to me. Sorry girls, "Come to Me" was much hotter. "Something" by Girl's Day is sexy and classy, and a great fit to the song's concept. The two stages they danced on contrast nicely, with orange and pink lighting respectively.  There are even scenes outside the neon-lit motel that their boyfriends are presumably using when they cheat on them, which is the whole point of the song.

Choosing is usually difficult, especially between such lovely ladies and high talent. The videos are all well done even if some of the sets are not to my liking. The music is all top notch. Nonetheless , I have been tasked with rating them, and I know what I like. Rainbow BLAXX ranks dead last, Dal Shabet is better, AoA squeaks in next because I like the sets, and Girl's Day finishes on top. I'm not a sexy concept hater, but I think too much of a good thing spoils it some. I like plots and special effects better.

Outfits

written by mmmccc

My favourite outfit would have to be AoA's black-and-tan minidress (with the slit zipped up!).  Although I'm a little bothered by the concept of their music video, this minidress does not fail to impress me with the modern silhouette and cleverly placed tan-colored section that enhances the girls' curves.  Runner-up would have to be Dal Shabet's outfits for "B.B.B."  The girls are clad in all-black or all-white apparel that includes figure hugging pants, tops with cutouts around the midriff, and sophisticated blazers--all topped with matching red lipsticks.  It just shows that sexiness doesn't have to show too much skin--with the right pieces, such as this blazer, it can be a sophisticated sexiness.

It's a game of "now you see it, now you don't" for Girl's Day's "Something" as they tease the audience with their feather ring and huge slit up their maxi skirt.  They wear a cropped long sleeve top and I do love the white lace top.  Their outfit as a whole, however, seem a little dated because it somehow reminds me of Destiny's Child back in the 90's and early 2000's.  I have to rank Rainbow BLAXX's outfits for "Cha Cha" in last place.  They have the skimpiest outfits among the four music videos as the girls are donned in black leather shorts, garters, and black girdles over white tops.  The outfits are treading the dangerous borderline between sexy and trashy.  However, I do feel that they have the best styled set among the four music videos and I also really like how they incorporate a pop of color in their eyeshadow.  It's challenging to get just the right pinks and peaches on the eyelids!

Impressively enough, according to the four different feature writers above, Girls' Day came out on top three out of four times!  Their performance, music, and music video were deemed the best so it seems like January was their month, indeed. Still, the other girl groups definitely have their own unique styles worth of attention and admiration.

How would you rank these girl groups in the categories above?

  2. Dal Shabet
  3. Girl's Day
