"I've never once been satisfied with my singing skills. Points-wise, I've never thought that it was worth anything over 70 points." Jung Yeob, the famous singer loved for his hit tracks 'Nothing Better,' 'Love You', and 'Without You,' recently sat down in an interview to discuss what music means to him, his pained experience as a transparent member of Brown Eyed Soul, his solo activities, and his future goals. Elaborating on his statement regarding how he never felt satisfied with his singing skills, Jung Yeob continued, "All of the singers probably feel the same way. They all have their own utopia in mind, and if that level of perfection isn't reached, it's never satisfying. Rhythm, beats, all of these are just the basics. What stands above it all are the 'emotions' you put into it. I want to be able to create a sound that is strong enough to bring out the deepest memories of my listeners." To Jung Yeob, music is like a salve that can cure the heart's troubles. He believes that the strength of a song lies in how much emotion the singer is able to pour into it. "It's something I'm always fretting about because the line of division isn't as clear. When I get too emotional, my throat closes up and I'm unable to sing. Trying to find the right emotional timing to the melody and beat of the song is a very sensitive and difficult process." He also calls himself a singer that 'tries his hardest,' meaning that he wasn't born with his talent. "I practiced singing like a crazy person." He first began his career as a member of Brown Eyed Soul and soon began his career as an acknowledged and praised musician. When Brown Eyed Soul first made their debut, the public was mainly interested in member Na-ul; thus, the group became known as 'the group with Na-ul in it,' or 'the group Na-ul made.' Due to the focus being put on one person, leader Jung Yeob made a point to aggressively set out in order to get not only his name, but the group's name known as well, during the group's long period of hiatus. "The bigger the influence from each member becomes, I believe that Brown Eyed Soul grows that much bigger as well. Na-ul already had a great name value when he joined so the public knew nobody else other than Na-ul. I tried to get the public to know that so many other voices existed behind the name. Did I succeed? I don't know. I don't think of it as a failure. It's more fitting to say that it's a work in process." Regarding the 3-4 years of absence, he continued, "In 2003, we ran into problems with our agency after the release of our first album. We rested for a few years and got into the habit of thinking that we didn't need to release albums frequently. I tried to promise myself to release a new album at least once every two years, but due to circumstances, couldn't keep it. I feel really apologetic to the fans that are waiting, but now that I've moved agencies and Na-ul has been discharged from the army, everything is at peace. We'll be releasing an album when the time is right." Jung Yeob then discussed his solo ventures, with the release of single 'Love You' in September and 'Without You' in October. Regarding the two different songs, Jung Yeob continued, "One song is about walking a road together, whie the other is about walking a road alone. I tried to express love and separation. 'Love You' is a love song with a piano melody, like 'Nothing Better,' while 'Without You' has an electronic, fantasy-like feel." When the singer isn't in the studio, he can be found on the radio or on the sets of variety shows - recently, he became the new DJ for MBC FM4U's "Blue Night, This is Jung Yeob," and is making surprise visits on MBC's "Infinity Challenge." He has also been working with Eco Bridge under the name of Honeydew'o, producing songs and featuring as a guest vocalist for other singers. "I want to perform music for a very long, long time. When I die one day and look back on my life, I want to be able to say, 'I walked down an okay path of music.' Just like now, I want to continue moving forward slowly, but on the right path, in order to become an unforgettable, lingering musician." Source + Photo: Mydaily
