In a tangerine orchard in Jeju, more than 200 birds have died after consuming the fruit.
On March 28, the Jeju Local Police Department announced that they're investigating 'Mr. A' for allegedly violating the Wildlife Protection and Management Act.
'Mr. A' is accused of injecting pesticides into tangerines within an orchard in Seogwipo City, leading to the deaths of over 200 birds that consumed the contaminated fruit.
The local police received a report on the afternoon of March 27, stating that more than 200 birds, including sparrows and starlings, had died.
Acting on the initial information provided by the informant, the police identified the suspect's vehicle and located 'Mr. A' near his residence around 3:30 PM that day. Upon questioning, 'Mr. A' reportedly confessed to the crime.
Lee Soon Ho, the chief of the Seogwipo Local Police Station, stated, “To determine the exact cause of the birds' deaths, we have submitted the tangerines and collected bird carcasses to the Jeju Health and Environment Research Institute for analysis.” He further mentioned, “We intend to strengthen the evidence by confirming whether the pesticides found in the suspect's possession match the substances injected into the tangerines.”
