Should PLAVE be considered K-pop idols?

AKP STAFF

Virtual boy group PLAVE has garnered much attention as they have been hitting their career high with multiple person records broken with their latest album 'ASTERUM: 134-1.'

According to the Circle chart (formerly Gaon) update this month, the virtual group has sold over one million copies across their entire discography, with two mini-albums and one single album, setting a new career milestone.

Not only that, PLAVE's first fan concert, 'Hello, Asterum!' sold out in just ten minutes of the pre-sale, proving the group's popularity.

However, a heated debate was started in a popular online community when a netizen raised questions on whether the virtual group should be considered K-pop idols.

The K-netizen began the discussion by saying, "Huh? PLAVE are not real humans but they're fake idols, like anime. But people are talking on 'talk choice' discussions as if they're real people and it's creepy. I didn't have any interest in PLAVE and recently found out about them. Their fans seem to be very strange people and their personalities are quirky too."

Other netizens joined the discussion to share their thoughts on this topic. While some agreed that PLAVE is closer to anime characters, some defended the group.

Korean netizens commented, "I think it's weird too... They're no different from otakus," "This is true. Their fans scare me. They have the same personality, talk the same, and also think the same. It was intriguing in many ways," "I think it's crazy how they treat them like real-life people," "
Well, this is the same concept as anime characters, lol it's the same,"
and "The market is clearly different but they're constantly coming into the idol industry and picking fights so of course people don't like them. They should stay with otakus and stay away from normal people."

Other netizens commented, "There's no use in explaining to people that there are actual people behind the characters," "Where did these people get hurt from? lol," "I don't like the group but there are actual people controlling the characters," "I know PLAVE and know what they are because I saw a few YouTube short videos but I know they're not anime. The OP didn't need to write a whole post on it, lol" "Well I support them because their talent got to see some light through virtual idol," "Just leave them alone, geez," and "I think otakus who are anime fans are the same as K-pop fanatics, lol."

Yes! They're just virtual idols. Nothing wrong with that, they're talented and the music is good. The musicians behind the characters are protected and can lead normal lives, sounds perfect.

Here we go again... 🙄

I would like to say that the biased content of this news surprises me, but when I see the authorship of it, it is the rule and not the exception.

It starts to feel like a personal attack when 4 out of 5 articles about Plave are not about what they have achieved but rather a constant attempt to question the legitimacy of the group, their achievements and even whether they should be considered k-pop or not.

The numbers speak for themselves. The albums sold, the charts and the two wins at the shows, the awards, the engagement of the fandom, the concert that sold out in 10 minutes, the lives that exceed 30 thousand views in real time. Just this week they won 2 awards at the Universal Superstar Awards 2024, but that obviously doesn't make news. Against facts, there are no arguments and therefore, debating the legitimacy of Plave at this moment is as useful as discussing whether the Earth is round or not. Yes it is. 👍

I already knew some of the members of previous groups and when I discovered that they were part of Plave I was even happier, not only because I already liked them before, but because I believe that a singer has no expiration date, he has the right to sing as long as want and not when the group reaches 7 years of age or does not perform as expected. The biggest proof of this is that more than half of the group are successful producers and lyricists who wrote several songs that other idols sing and that were and are still hugely successful.

People insist on not understanding that it was the members who decided to create the group, they were not "selected" by any company and the interest of the anonymous person (at least for now) is theirs so that they can maintain other projects they have in parallel without scrutiny that so many idols unfortunately suffer from.

The fact that they don't appear in person only bothers those who are too lazy to listen to the music and decide for themselves whether it's a group worth listening to or not. If after listening you don't like it, move on, there will certainly be countless incredible groups with equally incredible songs that deserve your like and affection. I follow a lot of them and liking Plave has never hindered or harmed the affection I have for any of the other groups.

It's time to change the subject and focus on what really matters.

Stan Plave 😘
