MBC ‘Good Day’ faces viewership decline in just two episodes.
MBC’s highly anticipated variety show ‘Good Day’, featuring BIGBANG’s G-Dragon, has seen a decline in viewership after just two episodes. Despite a star-studded lineup, including Kim Soo Hyun, Hwang Jung Min, Kian84, and comedian Jung Hyung Don, the program appears to be struggling to maintain momentum, raising questions about its long-term appeal.
According to Nielsen Korea, the second episode of ‘Good Day’, aired on February 23 KST, recorded a 3.6% nationwide rating, marking a 0.7% point drop from its premiere episode’s 4.3%. While the show initially gained traction, largely due to G-Dragon’s much-anticipated return to variety TV, the rapid decline suggests that the initial excitement may not have been enough to sustain audience interest.
At its core, ‘Good Day’ is an ambitious music project where G-Dragon, as a producer, collaborates with influential figures from various fields to create a song that represents the year. The inclusion of top-tier guests from entertainment, comedy, and art created high expectations, but the show’s execution has raised concerns.
The program’s biggest strength—G-Dragon as its centerpiece—could also be its biggest limitation. While his charisma and star power remain undeniable, the lack of a structured format or a solid hosting presence has led to critiques of disorganized conversations and inconsistent flow. Without a clear balance between casual talk and structured content, the show risks being perceived as a loosely connected series of celebrity interactions rather than a compelling music documentary.
Furthermore, some celebrity guest appearances have been underutilized, failing to contribute meaningful engagement beyond their name value. While the reunion of G-Dragon and Jung Hyung Don carries a nostalgic appeal, other guests, such as Kim Soo Hyun, seem to be included for their star status rather than their role in enhancing the show’s overall narrative.
For ‘Good Day’ to avoid its premiere becoming its peak viewership, it must go beyond G-Dragon’s popularity and establish its own distinct identity. Strengthening the show’s direction, pacing, and content structure will be crucial in retaining audience engagement.
As OTT platforms and YouTube continue to dominate entertainment consumption, traditional broadcast variety shows need to offer more than just big names to compete effectively. Whether ‘Good Day’ can evolve beyond a G-Dragon-centric experiment into a truly compelling music project remains to be seen.
