The allure of space is undeniable, and it’s no surprise that space dramas and movies are in high demand. South Korea’s entertainment industry has also ventured into the vast reaches of space, producing a range of captivating dramas and movies. Whether it’s space-station romances, exploring distant planets, or encounters with aliens, space-themed stories offer a great way to escape Earth’s confines.
Here’s a look at five thrilling Korean space dramas and films you won’t want to miss.
When the Stars Gossip
The ongoing space series “When the Stars Gossip” generated buzz, thanks to its star-studded cast, led by the K-drama star Lee Min Ho. The story follows Gong Ryong, an OB-GYN who stays at a space station as a space tourist with a secret mission. Set to marry the daughter of the chaebol group MZ, he unexpectedly falls for the station commander, Eve Kim. Although the drama is receiving mixed reviews and poor viewer ratings, this remains one to check out in my opinion.
The Silent Sea
The Silent Sea is an intense, atmospheric Netflix space series that takes place on the moon starring K-drama star Gong Yoo and Bae Doona as the leads. With Earth suffering from a lack of water and food caused by desertification, a team of astronauts is sent on a dangerous mission to retrieve mysterious samples from an abandoned lunar space station, where an accident killed everyone in the past.
The Moon
“The Moon” is a South Korean space survival film that explores the perilous adventure of an astronaut stranded on the moon. After a catastrophic accident during a lunar mission, the lead astronaut, Sun-woo, portrayed by Doh Kyung-soo, finds himself alone, fighting against time and the elements to survive. The film dives into themes of isolation, survival, and hope, all while delivering intense, action-packed moments.
Space Sweepers
Often referred to as Korea’s Guardians of the Galaxy, “Space Sweepers” is a vibrant space film set in a future where Earth is no longer habitable. The story follows a ragtag crew of misfits who work as space junk collectors, salvaging debris in orbit around Earth. Their lives take a dramatic turn when they discover a humanoid robot named Dorothy, who’s known to be a weapon of mass destruction and is wanted by UTS Space Guards.
Alienoid: Return to the Future
“Alienoid: Return to the Future” is a genre-defying film that blends elements of space fantasy, time travel, and action. It brings together two timelines—one set in the distant past and the other in the future. The story follows ancient Taoists as they travel through time and space in an effort to obtain a divine sword. Filled with epic space battles, aliens, and high-energy action, it’s a perfect pick for sci-fi lovers looking for something fresh and exciting.
