Bae Jung Nam recently shocked everyone by revealing he was a victim of a phishing scam.
This week’s episode of SBS’s ‘My Ugly Duckling’ sheds light on the alarming rise of voice phishing scams, showcasing their deceptive tactics and exploring potential solutions.
During the episode, Lee Sang Min, Kim Jong Min, and Bae Jung Nam gathered at Song Hae Na’s house. Song Hae Na expressed her gratitude to Bae Jung Nam, who had previously helped her avoid falling prey to a voice phishing scam. However, her relief was short-lived when scammers used a new method to target her again, shocking the "Mother Avengers" panel watching the scene.
In a surprising turn of events, Bae Jung Nam shared his own recent experience with a phishing scam. He explained how he was scammed out of 3,000 USD while trying to buy an item on a secondhand marketplace. The scammer, pretending to be the seller, persuaded him to transfer the money, and by the time he realized it was a scam, it was too late. Bae Jung Nam later took drastic measures to deal with the situation.
The episode also featured a phishing expert, invited by Kim Jong Min, who warned of the increasing sophistication of scams. He highlighted methods like "Smishing" which disguises itself as funeral notices, and voice phishing scams that impersonate law enforcement officials. The expert also introduced a terrifying new development - "AI voice phishing" - which uses realistic cloned voices to deceive victims.
The advanced and ever-evolving tactics of these scams left both the studio panel and viewers stunned.
