On January 22, MBC held a press conference a new building in Sangam-dong, Seoul, to celebrate the 900th episode of its variety program 'Radio Star.' The event was attended by Producer Kim Myung Yeop and MCs Kim Gook Jin, Kim Gu Ra, Yoo Se Yoon, and Jang Do Yeon, who shared various stories about the show.

Celebrating 16 years on the air since its debut in 2007, 'Radio Star' has become a Wednesday night staple, known for producing countless memorable moments and guests. Originally a sub-segment of 'Golden Fishery' for four years, it became a standalone hour-long program in 2011, making it MBC’s longest-running variety show.

During the press conference, the production team and MCs were asked about the recent controversy involving Goo Hye Sun and her choice to wear a hat during her appearance on the show.

PD Kim Myung Yeop responded cautiously, saying, “I’m hesitant to discuss this as it might dominate headlines. There were rumors about attitude issues, but that was not the case at all. One of my duties as a Producer is to monitor how guests appear on screen. For instance, I’ve previously asked Park Joon Hyung, who often wears sunglasses, if he’d like to switch them out due to glare. Similarly, with Goo Hye Sun, there were no issues, so there was no need to edit anything.”

He added, “She arrived early, participated well in script readings, and communicated with us effectively. Even during the recording, her attitude was excellent. Unfortunately, this turned into a controversy. I didn’t want to bring it up today because it might overshadow other topics.”

Kim Gu Ra also weighed in, stating, “In reality shows, it’s not uncommon to see people wearing costumes or hats. Goo Hye Sun wore the hat due to her household circumstances that day. Neither we nor Goo Hye Sun considered it an issue of attitude. Perhaps journalists or viewers misunderstood and interpreted it that way. Journalists, by the nature of their work, may have viewed it as a topic for discussion.”

He continued, “An attitude controversy usually refers to things like slouching or appearing uninterested. This wasn’t the case here. It was surprising to see it become such an issue.”

Kim Gu Ra added, “It’s not necessarily bad for something to become an issue, but Goo Hye Sun, being a seasoned professional, must have been upset. The production team may have spoken to her about it, but I think it’s unfortunate for her.” Yoo Se Yoon chimed in, pointing out that former MC Yoon Jong Shin frequently wore hats during his time on the show.

The 900th special episode of MBC’s Radio Star is set to air on February 5 at 10:30 PM KST.
