Super Junior's Heechul confessed that he was diagnosed with a disability following a traffic accident.
On the 12th, during SBS's My Little Old Boy, Heechul visited a fortune teller with fellow member Kim Jong Min, revealing a painful part of his life that he had never shared with his fans.
Heechul, "He lives a life of chance. He had a major turning point in his 20s."
Heechul then shared, "I had a serious car accident back then," referring to the traffic accident he was involved in during Super Junior’s activities in 2006.
The fortune teller added, "Your body’s axis was damaged," and advised, "You need to be cautious this July. Even in the summer, be careful. If you fracture a bone or break something, you could truly become disabled."
Although Kim Jong Min was shocked by the fortune teller’s direct comments, Heechul calmly confessed, "I’ve never told anyone, but I actually have a disability rating."
Heechul continued, "There’s a sticker for the disability rating that you can put on your car. I went with my manager to get that sticker, but then I thought, 'No, I should live more actively.' So, I deliberately didn’t get the sticker and came back."
He went on to explain, "I didn’t want to admit that my body was in pain. I thought if I overcame it, it’d be fine. That was already 10 years ago. I didn’t tell the fans because I thought they’d be sad if they heard 'your oppa got a disability rating.'”
Heechul’s mother also became emotional recalling that time. She said, "He had gone to pay his respects at Donghae’s father’s funeral and was on his way back when he had the accident. Even now, thinking about it, it brings tears to my eyes."
She also revealed, "Now he’s a bit better, but he said his legs hurt so much when he’s on stage. His bones were shattered, and his thigh bone was severely damaged, so they had to insert a metal rod."
"The doctor said he wouldn’t be able to dance anymore, but fortunately, after surgery, he was able to move, though the pain still makes it hard for him," she added.
In 2006, Heechul was involved in a car accident while returning to Seoul after attending Super Junior member Donghae’s father’s funeral. As a result, he suffered injuries that required 12 weeks of recovery. He underwent major surgery to insert seven metal rods due to fractures in his femur and ankle, and he was later diagnosed with a Grade 4 disability.
