'Squid Game' director Hwang Dong Hyuk has expressed his confidence in the upcoming Season 3.
On December 26, AP News published an interview with Hwang Dong Hyuk in which he discussed the challenges of filming the new seasons. He shared, “Seasons 2 and 3 of Squid Game feature a significantly larger cast, and managing so many people on set was incredibly difficult.” Reflecting on the filming process, he humorously added, “On the days when a character was scheduled to die, I’d tell the actor, ‘I’m sad I won’t see you tomorrow,’ but deep down, I was smiling inside.”
Director Hwang initially conceived 'Squid Game' as a film 15 years ago but faced rejection from investors and actors. After adapting the project for Netflix, it became a global phenomenon. He admitted, “I never imagined 'Squid Game' would grow into such a massive project."
The success of the series taught Hwang Dong Hyuk an important lesson. He shared, “Squid Game showed me that giving up is never the answer. If you love something and want to create it, the opportunity may come later, even if it’s not immediate. That idea could become the source of inspiration.”
Director Hwang also shared insights about the completed Seasons 2 and 3, noting, “There are more characters this time, especially younger ones. When we made Season 1, I believed people in their 20s or 30s struggling with debt might not feel desperate enough to join 'Squid Game.' I thought participants would need to be middle-aged to reach that level of despair. But the world has changed. Today, young people are finding it harder to secure stable jobs or achieve middle-class status, no matter how hard they work. Many are turning to cryptocurrency or online gambling in pursuit of a big break. I wanted to reflect this harsh reality in the new seasons.”
In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hwang Dong Hyuk explained, “Seasons 2 and 3 were originally conceived as one story, but as the episodes grew, it made sense to split them into two seasons.” Speaking about Season 3, which is set to premiere next year, he confidently stated, “It’s better than Season 2.”
Squid Game Season 2 will focus on Gi Hun (played by Lee Jung Jae) returning to the game to seek revenge, facing off against the Front Man (portrayed by Lee Byung Hun) in a fierce confrontation as the real game begins again. Season 3 is scheduled for release sometime next year.
