BTS set to complete military service in 2025: what lies ahead for the group?
One of the most anticipated events of 2025 is the conclusion of BTS’s military hiatus, as the remaining five members are scheduled to complete their mandatory service by June. However, questions remain about whether the group will immediately resume activities as a complete unit.
Military Service Status
Currently, Jin and J-Hope have already completed their military service. Jin was the first to enlist and was discharged on June 12, 2024, while J-Hope followed on October 17, 2024. Post-discharge, Jin released his solo album ‘HAPPY’ and has been actively participating in variety shows. J-Hope has also been keeping busy, throwing the ceremonial first pitch at the 2024 KBO Korean Series and appearing on ‘I Live Alone.’
The remaining five members are set to return in June 2025: RM and V on June 10, Jimin and Jungkook on June 11, and Suga, who is completing alternative service as a social service worker, on June 21.
Past and Future Activities
The group’s last album as a full team was the anthology album ‘Proof’ in June 2022. Since then, the members have focused on solo careers, achieving remarkable success. Jimin and Jungkook both topped the Billboard Hot 100 with their hits ‘Like Crazy’ and ‘Seven,’ while Suga’s album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. J-Hope became the first K-pop artist to headline Lollapalooza.
Despite their hiatus, BTS minimized its impact by releasing pre-produced content and albums during their military service. This strategic approach has helped maintain their brand power, and their eventual comeback as a complete group is expected to have a significant global impact.
Challenges and Controversies
While fans eagerly anticipate BTS’s return, there are challenges to address, particularly concerning Suga’s drunk-driving incident in September 2024. The controversy arose after Suga, while on alternative service, was caught riding an electric scooter under the influence. Although he received a fine, allegations of attempting to downplay the incident during public disclosures further fueled disappointment. This has caused divisions within the fandom, with some fans calling for his removal from the group.
The unresolved tension surrounding this issue could hinder a seamless comeback, and a rushed return might exacerbate the situation.
Commitment to Future Activities
Despite the controversies, BTS members have expressed strong enthusiasm for reuniting. During the 2024 MAMA Awards, Jimin hinted at the group’s future, stating, “I’m already excited, thinking about what songs and performances we’ll share after our return. Expect us to come back stronger and better.”
HYBE has also expressed hope for BTS’s full-group activities in 2025. However, in a recent earnings call, the company stated that plans for 2026 are still under discussion, suggesting a cautious approach to the group’s comeback.
The Road Ahead
As BTS transitions into a “military-completed” group, anticipation is at an all-time high. While their return could redefine the K-pop industry, careful planning and resolution of existing issues will be crucial to ensuring their comeback lives up to expectations.
