KATSEYE’s new song ‘Touch’ and Girls’ Generation’s 2009 mega-hit ‘Gee’ combine into one track.
On September 4 KST, KATSEYE (members Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia, and Yoonchae) released a performance video on their official social media channels, showcasing a mashup version of their debut EP’s double title track ‘Touch’ and Girls’ Generation’s iconic song ‘Gee’.
This mashup is particularly significant as it bridges 15 years of K-pop history, bringing together a newly formed global girl group and a legendary group that helped launch K-pop into the global spotlight.
According to HYBE X Geffen Records, the ‘Touch X Gee’ mashup project came about after E-TRIBE, the producer behind ‘Gee’, heard KATSEYE’s ‘Touch’ and was intrigued. He proceeded to create the mashup and shared the result with KATSEYE, who then released it to the public. E-TRIBE is a well-known K-pop producer responsible for numerous hits, including Lee Hyori’s ‘U-Go-Girl’.
The performance video featuring KATSEYE members Manon and Yoonchae is particularly striking. The two seamlessly blend the key dance moves from ‘Touch’ and ‘Gee’, swiftly crossing their hands in the signature move from ‘Touch’ while incorporating the lively ‘crab leg dance’ from ‘Gee’. The smooth connection of these moves into a single performance is captivating and showcases the harmony between the two songs.
This ‘Touch X Gee’ performance adds even more meaning to the mashup project. It not only brings back memories of Girls’ Generation’s golden era through the iconic choreography of ‘Gee’, but it also highlights the modern sensibilities of ‘Touch’, representing a new era in K-pop. A representative from HYBE X Geffen Records commented that KATSEYE developed the choreography in the video as a tribute to Girls’ Generation and E-TRIBE.
KATSEYE has been actively engaging with fans through various mashup videos. Mashup tracks, which blend multiple songs into one, have become a popular way for fans and artists to interact. The ‘Touch X Gee’ mashup is particularly noteworthy, as it brings together a rising group with a legendary one, garnering interest from K-pop fans across different generations.
