Singer HyunA faces backlash from fans following October wedding announcement with Yong Junhyung
Following her announcement of an October wedding with Yong Junhyung, singer HyunA is experiencing significant backlash from fans. She has faced a boycott at events and the cancellation of her North American concert, illustrating the extent of the fallout.
On July 13 KST, HyunA performed as a guest singer at the "Summer Night Race" event held in Everland, Yongin, Gyeonggi-do. She showcased her hit songs such as "Bubble Pop!," "Red," "Lip & Hip," "I'm Not Cool," and her new song "Q&A."
However, videos from the event spread across various online communities, revealing the lack of audience response.
Despite previously receiving enthusiastic sing-alongs and reactions at university festivals and regional performances, this time the crowd remained largely silent. Many Korean netizens attribute this boycott to the aftermath of her wedding announcement with Yong Junhyung.
The backlash extends beyond domestic events to international ones as well. HyunA's North American tour concert was canceled. The organizers announced, "Unfortunately, the event has been canceled by the organizer. Refunds will be processed through the payment method used at the time of purchase." Additionally, HyunA deleted or set to private all concert-related posts on her official social media. A foreign media outlet mentioned that low ticket sales led to the tour's cancellation, and there is speculation that the wedding announcement with Yong Junhyung may have influenced the schedule.
HyunA publicly announced her relationship with Yong Junhyung in January. Both posted the same photo on their respective social media accounts, asking fans to look kindly upon their relationship. Yong Junhyung later confirmed their relationship on a fan community platform.
Approximately six months after their public relationship announcement, the couple announced their wedding. They are set to have a private outdoor wedding at Samcheonggak in Seoul on October 11. HyunA's agency, At Area, stated, "HyunA and Yong Junhyung have been a great comfort to each other during difficult times and have decided to get married. They will hold a ceremony with close acquaintances in October and start a new chapter in their lives."
However, Yong Junhyung’s involvement in the 2019 "Burning Sun" scandal has cast a shadow over their relationship. Given his connection to the incident, public opinion on their relationship has been mixed. Last month, Yong Junhyung wrote a lengthy explanation about the Burning Sun incident, but public perception remains critical. The issue resurfaced with the recent release of the BBC News Korea documentary "Burning Sun: Exposing the secret K-pop chat groups" leading to continued negative comments on HyunA’s personal social media opposing her relationship with Yong Junhyung.
