When the casting for Season 2 of Netflix's megahit series 'Squid Game' was announced, online platforms were flooded with questions regarding the absence of any female actors. In response, Netflix assured fans that additional casting details would be disclosed soon.
On June 18, Netflix Korea unveiled the cast for Season 2, which includes Siwan, Kang Ha Neul, 'The Glory' actor Park Sung Hoon, and Yang Dong Geun. In the video titled 'Squid Game Season 2 Casting Announcement,' released by Netflix, the newly announced actors join the returning cast members from Season 1, namely Lee Jung Jae, Lee Byung Hun, Wi Ha Joon, and Gong Yoo. Notably, all eight actors featured in the video are male, which led to further criticism from fans worldwide.
One comment on Netflix Korea's Instagram post, stating, "No women were cast? Are you kidding?" garnered over 2,000 likes. Other reactions questioned the absence of female actors, with comments like, "If you're revealing eight people, shouldn't at least one be female?" and "It's hard to believe there won't be any female actors. Let's not jump to conclusions and wait." In response, some fans argued that there might indeed be female actors in the series, but they were not disclosed in the initial casting announcement.
Online users in other popular online community sites commented, "They should reveal all at once, why are they saying they can't disclose all the casting?" "I'm going to wait. I don't think the director would forget to cast female actors," "Jung Ho Yeon and Lee Yoo Mi became so successful through season 1, there's no way they would leave out female actors," "It's BS that they're saying they can't disclose it yet," and "Maybe they're going to use not so popular actresses...lol."
In Season 1 of 'Squid Game,' female actors gained immense popularity and received multiple awards. Jung Ho Yeon, who portrayed 'Sae Byuk,' won the Best Actress Award at the Actors Guild of America (SAG) Awards in February of the previous year. In March of the same year, she also received the prestigious Critics' Choice Super Awards for Best Actress. Furthermore, Lee Yoo Mi, who played Ji Young, made history by winning the Best Actress award at the Emmy Awards last September. She became the first non-English-speaking drama actress and the first Korean actress to achieve such a feat.
A Netflix official, speaking to The Hankyoreh newspaper on June 19, stated, "We cannot disclose at this time whether female actors will appear in Season 2 of 'Squid Game.' Further casting details will be revealed soon." Following the success of Season 1, Season 2, directed by Hwang Dong Hyuk, is set to begin filming in the latter half of this year.
