Has Mimiirose's debut been overshadowed by their producer Lim Chang Jung's pity story?

The K-pop industry is a battlefield where competition is fierce. It is a brutal market where only the trendiest survive. It's not an easy industry, and it is hard to make it to the top, even with the best composers, lyricists, choreographers, art directors, and stylists all working together to produce a K-pop idol.

As the years go on, this survival game becomes more difficult and fierce, particularly for male and female idols. Only those who stand out among the dozens of groups that debut will be able to make it. To do this, a group's image is the most important in garnering attention from the public.

Recently, Lim Chang Jung launched a girl group called mimiirose, and the girl group garnered much attention even before their debut, being known as "Lim Chang Jung's girl group." Unfortunately, it seems that Lim Chang Jung's story of producing an idol group for the first time seems to have overshadowed the group's actual promotions.

Even before revealing the members, Lim Chang Jung went on talk shows and shared that he had invested a lot of money in creating a girl group and confessed that he had even sold land and music copyrights to produce his new girl group. He went on to share, "The girls' abilities are increasing but my debt is also increasing."

Instantaneously, mimiirose became the girl group that put Lim Chang Jung into debt. Luckily, the girl group's image was not affected as severely. Instead, anticipation rose since mimiirose was seen as a girl group with exceptional skills enough for Lim Chang Jung to sell his music copyrights to his most renowned songs.

But things started going downhill when Kim Chang Yeol mentioned mimiirose on his social media with a caption that depleted the girl group's image. Kim Chang Yeol wrote on his Instagram, "Changjung's babies. If mimiirose flops, he said he will move in with me with all his family members. Please help me. Save me. Let's go mimiirose, let's be successful go go."

Many have criticized Kim Chang Yeol's post promoting the girls in the way of begging for help using pity was unfitting, especially for a rookie girl group. Lim Chang Jung's story of going into debt to launch the girl group continued even after mimiirose debuted. On October 1, Lim Chang Jung appeared in a YouTube video with the girl group and explained, "I spent 20 billion (14 million USD) on them." Again, he talked about the amount of money he spent on them.

Of course, a lot of money is needed when creating and producing an idol group, and Lim Chang Jung is allowed to vent about the difficulties he faced when creating his first girl idol group.

However, many experts say Lim Chang Jung could have talked about those things after the girls debuted. Many are saying it would have been better for Lim Chang Jung to have waited until mimiirose garnered a bit of attention on their own and then claim he produced them, saying, "They were so talented that is why I even sold my music copyrights." This would have put a more positive light on the girls increasing the value for both the group and the producer.

Even netizens say Lim Chang Jung needs to stay away from the spotlight and let the girls shine. Netizens commented, "Lim Chang Jung needs to stay quiet if he wants the girls to do well," "Now their image is stuck that they are Lim Chang Jung's girl group that he spent so much money on," "All I can think about is the money Lim Chang Jung spent when I see the girl group," "It would have been better if he stopped at 'It's the girl group I produced,' and left it at that," "On top of that Kim Chang Yeol's promotion..." "I really agree, the girls need a chance to prove themselves on their own," and "They are definitely being overshadowed by Lim Chang Jung's story of selling land and music copyright."

I think they were always going to have an uphill battle -- now is a really crowded time to debut a new girl group! It's a pity, because the girls really are talented and I'm loving their debut single album. But if even groups with higher budgets from more established labels are struggling to get the attention they deserve, maybe any media interest is helpful, even if it focuses on their founder's sorry...

I think it's the opposite, any attention they got was because of him, they seem lovely but let's be honest him and his story are the only reason they're even on the radar, even if it was a pity story it still managed to get them some attention and people know they exist, specially koreans, and they could still turn things around and profit off of it
