IST Entertainment's new 7-member boy group has officially announced a team name change.
Previously, a total of 7 contestants were chosen to debut as IST Entertainment's new boy group on the survival program 'The Origin - A, B, Or What?'. Soon afterward, IST Entertainment announced that the 7-debut team members would be known as ABO, which stands for "At the Beginning of Originality".
Unfortunately, the team name "ABO" was quickly met with concerns from fans, as some pointed out that the term could be interpreted as an offensive racial slur in Australia.
Now, IST Entertainment has announced as of June 2 that the team's name will be changed to ATBO, with its meaning remaining the same.
ATBO, made up of members Jung Seunghwan, Oh Junseok, Seok Rakwon, Ryu Junmin, Bae Hyunjun, Yang Donghwa, and Kim Yeonkyu, will be debuting some time in the second half of 2022. The group is the first boy group to debut under IST Entertainment since the launch of The Boyz in 2017.
And ABOO would have been too silly to be taken seriously because it sounds like Abu, the monkey in Aladdin LOL. ATBO isn't amazing, but I'm sure fans will just get used to it.
On a side note, I personally am kind of done with acronym names like BTS, NCT, BTOB, DKZ, and a million others. I love names like Seventeen, Treasure, Kingdom, Red Velvet, Twice: words that are interesting and simple enough to be remembered! No specialized spellings (numbers in place of letters, or added letters like billlie or weeekly), just a regular word used as a name for a group. What do you guys think are the more interesting group names?
