On the 27th of September, the 15 million KRW (12,000 USD) action plan to remodel Hwaak Tunnel in Samji Park into a stargazing garden was completed. This comes as a consequence of its rising popularity as a tourist attraction whereby visitors can get a clear view of the night sky filled with bright stars.
Built in 2013 as a shelter for residents, Hwaak Tunnel was not considered a tourist hotspot and saw a low amount of visitors. However, this was set to change in October 2020 when MAMAMOO member, Hwasa, filmed an episode of the popular Korean variety program “I Live Alone.”
In the episode, Hwasa is seen visiting the location, claiming it the best place in Seoul to see the stars. After airing, Hwaak Tunnel saw an onslaught of visitors also wanting to stargaze and, in a picture shared by netizens, a herd of cars lined up just to enter the spot.
Today, Hwaak Tunnel boasts a 15 million won remodel on its aging facilities, complete with a themed photo zone and new floor works, thanks to Hwasa.
It is a great initiative and a real gift for visitors.Which allows them to admire the night sky without being impeded by the city lights.
