As G-Dragon (Kwon Jiyong) attained success, other people accused him of plagiarism.
'Heartbreaker' was one of the most successful works of G-Dragon. It went to sell over 3 million digital downloads alone and topped all music charts in Korea. As the song hit big, many anties claimed that GD plagiarized the melody of Flo Rida's 'Right Round.'
Anties kept talking about it although a lot of musicians, producers and even 'Right Round's owner Flo Rida himself said there was no similarity.
Recently a netizen on Pann found Bang Shi Hyuk's notice about this issue. Bang Shi Hyuk's notice reads:
"Lately it's a big topic if Bigbang's Kwon Jiyong is the composer of the song or not. Maybe I'm a bit late but after a few days of not using the internet, I still see this issue being discussed.
The thing that surprised me most was that people were so rude about this artist. The public recognizes, enjoys and consumes the products of this talent and sometimes reacts surprisingly sensitively.
...
Kwon Jiyong is a composer and producer with a tremendous talent that even I who work in the same same field always envy. When I listened to Bigbang's 'Lies' and 'Haru Haru'(which were composed and produced by G-Dragon), the surprise was so great that I felt as if I were Salieri looking at Mozart. (note: Salieri was another good musician who lived in the same era with Mozart but always overshadowed by Mozart's greatness. Thus, he always envied Mozart. )
I assure you that Kwon Jiyong is the best composer of our time and a talented singer who will lead the music industry in the future.
Now let's make it easier for Kwon Jiyong to focus on his work, so that he can return with another work that will surprise and delight us."
Netizens commented;
-"Flo Rida personally announced that there was no plagiarism"
-"When 'Lies' was released, everyone wondered who composed the songㅋㅋㅋ It was made by 19 year-old GD alone. Now there are a lot of idols who compose but it was rare at that time. GD went beyond just doing it and made everything a hit."
-"I'm a fan of GD. Thank you Bang Shi Hyuk for saying those. "
-When the other celebrities do something wrong, it gets buried soon but whenever GD does something wrong, it becomes a huge issue and is talked for years."
-"At the time when G-Dragon's popularity reached it's peak, a lot of people hated him but his solo debut stage got 20% viewership ratings. Still nobody can break this record"
-"Heartbreaker was an album that became a huge hit. One of the youngest idols composed and produced an album. Everyone was dying of jealousy so they accused GD of plagiarism and other things.
Bang Shi Hyuk has also said that YG and BIGBANG became a role model for his path.
What do you think?
idk if younger/ newer K-Pop fans know, but idols played no part in writing and/ or producing their own music before G-Dragon. Some wrote a side track or 2 in an album and even less produced, but G-Dragon was the first to write and produce entire EPs and albums, including the title track.
(T.O.P wrote his own parts though and there were co-producers, of course). GD and Big Bang's contributions to K-Pop are unrivaled.
