Title got your attention? Good, because this is a question I always wondered as a Carat. This question isn't shedding what's necessarily wrong with the group, but rather why they aren't as big as other top boy groups despite being considered among them?
With a large fanbase, high album sales, and big concerts, Seventeen proves to be a successful and popular boy group. They're not nearly as big as BTS or EXO (I personally don't know if they ever will be at that level), but the group has earned enough merit to at least be in the top 5 among boy groups for the 3rd generation of K-Pop.
Yet, here's the problem. Why don't their music video views ever hold up to the apparent success they have? You may argue that the correlation of their singles never charting so high in Korean streaming services leads to less unique music video watchers. But, if that were the case, why do Korean boy groups such as Got7 or NCT, who's singles don't chart as high either but have high album sales, easily accumulate 50 million views within at least a month. Besides coming from the Big 3, why is this case? The Big3 case also doesn't always work for boy groups. Winner, for example, though usually high charting, don't always hit it big with music video views.
Seventeen is a generally known group upon the K-Pop community so why is it so hard for their music videos to achieve feats like 10 million under 24 hours when it's easy for other groups to do so in 10 hours? Wouldn't their general popularity at least have 50% of K-Pop stans go check out the music video (no need for streaming) like any other popular KPop group?
Seventeen isn't everyone's taste especially with them debuting and up until recently, doing more 'cutesy' concepts that boy group stans aren't entirely attracted to. But their recent mature, dark, cool concept hasn't exactly hit it off within the KPop community either. Besides music videos, their music shows stages don't accumulate as many views as others.
I don't expect people to become Carats after watching their music videos or anything, I just really wonder why their music video views never seem to equal to the success they seem to have. They, in general, just don't seem to have the same hype as other top boy groups, despite being considered one. Other groups worked hard for their artistry and in a culture of KPop where view counts are everything, it saddens me that Seventeen isn't doing well in that area.
Their view counts are not necessarily terrible but they could be better and I genuinely want to know why this could be the case.
people need to stop prioritizing popularity and views
there's nothing wrong with seventeen
