3 Thoughts about Momoland before 'Show Me'

MOMOLAND

Hey guys, SquidMaster here. Today, I want to share 3 important thoughts about Momoland before they release their comeback album, 'Show Me'. Momoland is a 9-member group featuring Hyebin, Yeonwoo, Jane, Taeha, Nayun, Daisy, JooE, Ahin, and Nancy.

1) Will the concept work?

Momoland's 'BAAM' was an attempt to solidify the upbeat, energetic style that they had introduced in 'BBOOM BBOOM'. However, many believed that 'BAAM' just ended up sounding like a carbon copy of 'BBOOM BBOOM', and the group ultimately received a flood of criticism for a lack of creativity. However, this no longer seems to be an issue:

The released concept photos seem to be showing a sexy concept that completely deviates from what we have seen in both 'BAAM' and 'BBOOM BBOOM'. I hope that this will mean that 'Show Me' will introduce different musical characters that will show the girls' charms in a way we have not seen before. With that said, it's important that Momoland really capitalizes on this opportunity. They've shown us they can pull off cute, they've shown us they can pull off energetic EDM. If they can pull off sexy, this will be a group acknowledged for their musical versatility and talents. If not, the criticisms they faced during 'BAAM' will come right back.

2) Can they avoid controversies?

Whether you like Momoland or not, you've probably heard of the rumors regarding Momoland as a 'disrespectful' or 'troublesome' group (I personally think that issue has been overly-exaggerated and is untrue in several cases). And even if many of these claims made by anti-fans may not be true, it has still developed a negative reputation of Momoland among audiences. This means that everything Momoland does during this comeback (from variety shows, award ceremonies, performances, clips of them watching other artists) will be exaggerated in order to fit negative agendas; in other words, Momoland needs to be careful if they are to improve their image.

One mistake that I really hope the group (well, MLD Entertainment) does not repeat again is regarding the MV. In the 'BAAM' MV, there were multiple complaints and criticisms against Momoland for some of their outfits (using an African dashiki as a substitution for a Mexican outfit, stereotyping Egyptian culture, etc), which some viewers considered to be 'culturally appropriating'. Though the ideas of cultural appropriation and stereotypes are completely subjective, there are obvious methods that the company can implement in order to produce a captivating MV while not offending a tremendous number of people. The company and MV producers can always afford to do a little more research in order to make songs better. I hope this is the case in the 'Show Me' MV.

I really like this group, and their team chemistry especially. Let's hope that they will not spark any more controversies in the future.

3) Will Ahin get the lines she deserves?

Ahin is the main vocalist of Momoland, but you may have noticed something strange: she barely gets any lines. Here, take a look at some line distribution data for 'BBOOM BBOOM' and 'BAAM', courtesy of HEXA6ON.

As you can see, Ahin has consistently held the second-to-last or last in line distributions. I don't think that these numbers are acceptable for the main vocalist. Though I can understand MLD Entertainment's desire to affirm JooE as the face of the group, there needs to be better line distribution for Ahin not only to improve the balance of the group but to amplify the musical color of their songs (she's a great singer!)

What do you think of my 3 thoughts? Let me know in the comments below.

I absolutely agree that many of the controversies are exaggerated. Especially the one with Nancy glaring at Blackpink. I honestly think she has a rbf which isn't her fault.

No matter what they do people will still find a way to hate them. They don’t deserve any hate but it’s the unfortunate truth. Hopefully their comeback does well though!
