On February 22, video footage of a woman closely resembling Doan Thi Huong auditioning for a Vietnamese pop idol talent show circulated the web and received much attention.
A Japanese media outlet and various press agencies reported that the woman in the audition video to be Doan Thi Huong but these claims have yet to be fully substantiated.
The video was published under the YouTube name Hong Quan featuring a woman looking much like Doan Thi Huong auditioning in front of a panel of judges for 'Vietnam Idol'. The title of the clip is: '?oàn Th? H??ng thi Vietnam Idol 2016.' In the video, after singing for a brief moment, the woman was disqualified from the first round.
The contestant stated that her hometown was Nam Dinh, which was also the hometown listed on Huong's passport from information given by the Malaysian police.
According to Japanese news source, Asahi News, the media outlet discovered through her friends that Doan Thi Huong was working as an actress and dancer. There also have been reports of her dating a Korean man and going on a trip together with him to Jeju Island. The alleged assailant had a Facebook page with the name "Ruby Ruby" which was confirmed by Huong's family members as an account belonging to her. She reportedly grew up on a rice farm in North Vietnam.
On the Facebook page "Ruby Ruby," there is a photo of Huong wearing the much talked-about 'LOL' t-shirt. It seems this person had a great interest in Korea posting photos of numerous Korean dishes and such. Out of the 65 friends on her Facebook, 27 had Korean names. She also posted in Hangul from time to time on Facebook.
