Of course, many fans are defending him, saying there was no malicious intent and that the comments are just a friendly jab/exchange between two close friends.
What do you guys think about what JB said? Was it a homophobic comment or are netizens overreacting to a joke?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]
I don't really know what I'm doing here since the only Kpop band I actually listen to is BTS (and also this article is super old now), but the internet and it's rabbit holes...
However, I have to say that the quote featured in this article is misleading. The wording here
"During the show, however, after going to a couples cafe, JB seemed to express his discomfort at Youngjae's comment, 'I wanted to come here with you.' JB responds, 'This place is not for two boys... I might beat you up.'"
takes both statements out of context. It's after the conversation becomes focused on Youngjae and JB being a theoretical "couple" that JB says about beating him up. 'This place is not for two boys' is 10/10 'phobic, but the violent sentiments aren't directly linked to it - it's in reference to Youngjae's "advances" on JB.
And tbh, I took the latter quote as a "joke" coming from a place of discomfort. Not the best thing he could have said, and maybe he is homophobic. But I didn't take it as JB saying he would beat people up for being in a same gender relationship. It sounds like him just saying that he might have to beat up Youngjae for saying he wanted to go there with him (dating and couples and shit associated with it as it apparently is).Anyway, I'm glad to be a BTS stan. No offence to GOT7 fans - I know nothing of this fandom (feel free to educate me though). Sorry this shit is in italic. It won't let me fix it.
