SHINee's Minho is playing a runaway teen who enjoys drinking and smoking in his first lead role film 'Two Men'. To perfect the role, Minho recently revealed that he had to learn to smoke but managed to quit right away. The idol actor explained his experience with smoking and quitting in detail during an interview on November 29.
First, Minho shared why he chose to smoke, saying, "At first, I was actually thinking about not doing it. I told the director, and the smoking scenes were all taken out but it kept getting in my mind when I saw the script. In a way, it's an item and an option [for the film]. I was thinking about it, and at one point, I felt like that I had to do it this time so I boldly went on with the challenge."
He continued, "Every time I smoked, I thought, 'This is not me smoking. It's Jin Il who's smoking.' And what was helpful is not only did I get to learn from it, but I felt like I became more close with my character."
However, Minho revealed that he struggled to quit after the film. He explained, "I came to understand why people need to smoke after they eat, during drinking, and after filming. There was a perfect reason." He continued, "After the movie, I had to pinch my own thighs to quit. To be honest, I almost gave up thinking that I can't quit, but when I thought of the promise I made to myself and thought 'Are you this weak,' I immediately came to quit."
To the suggestion of being a spokesman for a smoke-free campaign, Minho said, "I know how difficult it is, so I don't want to give stress. I used to say things to smokers when I never smoked, but you know they say experience is scary. After actually doing it myself, I realized that it's not something that you can just easily say."
