Police apprehended a woman in her 20's for strangling her 22-month-old son, allegedly because she grew angry following an argument with her husband.
Busan Bukbu Police Station revealed this past August 6 that they have arrested a 29-year-old woman identified as Hwang without a warrant for charges of murder.
Hwang is suspected of strangling her 22-month-old son to death using a belt at her home in Busan's Buk District on August 5 around 4 p.m. Hwang then attempted suicide by strangling herself and inflicting other means of self-harm but managed to survive. Hwang's murder was first discovered by her husband four hours later after he returned home from work.
Hwang and her husband immediately drove their son to the hospital with the hopes of saving him but it was already too late. The husband later testified to the police, "I found it strange that my wife hid in the bathroom with our son and didn't come out for a long time, so I forced open the door and saw our son's limp body."
Hwang reportedly confessed to the hospital's medical team that she killed her son. The medical team proceeded to report Hwang to the police, and she was arrested without a warrant.
Hwang, who married around four years ago, would allegedly say, "Let's just all die together," every time there was discord between her and her husband. Police's investigations into the case revealed that the day before Hwang committed the murder, she had gotten into yet another argument with her husband. Hwang testified, "I committed the crime thinking that if our son and I died, then my husband would feel remorse."
Meanwhile, authorities stated, "Hwang seemed very emotionally unstable but there were no records of her receiving any medical treatment. As soon as we confirm the motive and details behind Hwang's crime, we plan to request an official warrant." Police have also requested an autopsy for the baby's body in order to find out the exact cause of his death.
