HIGH SOCIETY - EPISODE 11
Walking into walls: still funny
And now, everything changes:
Joon Ki admits to Yoon Ha that he knew that she was rich before they started dating and he intended to marry well. At a swanky hotel, Ji Yi and Chang Soo make love. Yoon Ha's mom and pop talk of divorce, and he lets her know that if she does this, she'll be a nobody. Ji Yi and Yoon Ha start their new jobs at Taejin. Yoon Ha meets with Chang Soo to suss out Joon Ki's weak spots and makes plans to destroy him. Joon Ki gets a job at Taejin (because they always have to complicate things). Chang Soo's mom finds out that Chang Soo lied to her about breaking up with Ji Yi and gets her evicted...
Joon Ki has just turned out to be a jerk. I know he was a little cold and calculating before, but this is ridiculous. I kept expecting him to say "but there was a snag in my plan, I fell in love with you" but no such luck. It was a bit annoying because they would do things couples would do, but somehow there was no tenderness in his gaze and sometimes he'd get this look in his eye that weird emotions were in play. Belying his good looks, he struck a creepier figure than the serial killers in some of the dramas I watched, and that's not a good thing.
"I think it's still moving..."
Yoon Ha, unfortunately, has now become creepy as well. Instead of the sweet chaebol who wanted to fall in love with a guy who didn't care about her money, she's now turned in Mr. Hyde. She hasn't done a complete personality turnaround -- she's still friends with Ji Yi, for example, but she now has made it her mission in life to see Joon Ki humiliated. But how's this going to play out now that they're working for the same company? Chang Soo already warned her that if she wants to beat Joon Ki, she'll have to be meticulous. How far is she likely to go? Is she willing to sacrifice everything to see him humbled?
And now we have classic examples of everyone being mean to everyone. Well, except the best couple in this drama, but it sounds like that's coming next episode, judging from the preview. I know some western soaps revel in that sort of thing, but I think we can come up with better plots without having everyone being bad to each other. Good examples: 'The Girl Who Can See Smells,' 'My Love From Another Star,' or 'Angel Eyes.'
"Buy an iPhone they said, it comes with a map, they said."
Sadly, I need to see how this all plays out. Now that I've started this train wreck, I need to walk along, to inspect every car, and stomach the scenes of devastation. Because I want to find out where they're taking this. They've blown apart a relationship they've spent the whole series building, they're about to kill another one, and the bromance that I thought was fairly awesome is also gone. Is anyone going to end up happy in the end?
