17-year-old high school student from Ulsan commits suicide after being beaten by classmates

Buzz

A 17-year-old female high school freshman, identified as Kim, committed suicide by jumping off the tenth floor of an apartment building in Ulsan after getting beaten by her classmates. In the note that Kim left behind, she named four attackers who were shockingly revealed to have always been her close friends at school.

Kim wrote, "I think the tears and troubles that I had because of you guys will now be gone." It also read, "It was hard to breathe in the morning, maybe because it was a fist," "You called me out to beat me," "And stealthily pretending to brush away my hair while hitting me," and "I thought I was going into depression because of you."

Kim also added, "If the first year students were to be consulted, you would have a lot of reports against you. Stop hurting others. It will all come back to you," hinting that there were other victims as well. Kim wrote, "I hope you sincerely reflect after you get the punishment you deserve."

According to the police and the school, the named assailants and Kim were known to be close friends but had some altercations after they found out that Kim had lied to them around August 30 to 31.

In addition, a portion of the five students including Kim had even been punished in the past for being pointed out as assailants in a survey about violence within the school that was conducted in the first semester, leading to disciplinary action.

The school commented, "We were under the impression that the students who were listed in the note by Kim were close friends of hers so we are baffled that the situation had escalated to suicide." Lastly, the police commented that the four students listed in the note as assailants had admitted to assaulting Kim.

Unfortunately, this is not a unique case as there have been many precedents showing that bullying in school have yet to be resolved.  It appears there still needs to be measures taken to ensure that this does not happen again.

Our condolences to Kim and her family.
