As K-Pop fans undoubtedly know, South Korea is rife with constant suspicions left and right that this celebrity or that celebrity has done a procedure in the past or even recently.
The culture has grown to be so famous (or perhaps infamous, depending on your take) that 'ABC Nightline' even decided to cover it recently through a segment entitled 'South Korea's Obsession With Plastic Surgery.' The reporter, JuJu Chang, specifically tailed two women, one translator named Christina Lim, who felt burdened by the criticism from others asking why she was even on TV, and another woman from Los Angeles named Jessica Choi, who flew all the way to Korea for the cheaper and allegedly better option of JK Medical Group.
It was revealed that one out of five women (20%) in South Korea underwent plastic surgery. To stay ahead of competitors, a very luxurious treatment at a place like JK Medical Group includes services such as pick up from the airport and a beautiful suite during recovery. However, it's expensive as the cost can be as much as a down payment on a house in the states for Jessica Choi, who wanted to fix various things such as her eyes, nose, and jaw line. However, this was still comparatively much cheaper than in America, as Jessica Choi said it would cost a down payment on two houses. She also stated that the Korean doctors seem to be much better. In addition, she revealed it was not just an appearance focused procedure for her. Rather, she had to deal with an abusive husband in the past and felt that getting a new jaw in essence would be like removing baggage from the past and embarking on a new life.
On the morning of the procedure, Christina Lim seemed both nervous and excited as she said, "I can't wait to get this over with. Even if I die, I will die a pretty face," as plastic surgery - especially in excess - is known to have its risks. Is it all worth it?
