What is there to say about WASSUP that hasn't already been said? Few rookie groups have been quite as hotly debated in the comment sections here on allkpop than WASSUP, whose articles consistently shot to the top of our most-discussed lists. Love them or hate them, you guys sure seem to enjoy talking about them!
While I think the individual members of WASSUP are adorable- their company needs to get Nada on the variety circuit like, yesterday, because she's hilarious- their debut song was not cute. More shouting than singing or rapping, awful costumes and choreography, and this weird faux hip-hop concept that didn't appear to have much thought behind it, all of which added up to a mess of a debut. As far as the twerking... let's just say I believe it about as much as I believe A-PRINCE doing the mambo.
All of that is behind us now, however, as WASSUP is back with "Hotter than a Summer", an understated, salsa-flavored dance song completely devoid of any shouting or grating fake laughter. Best of all, it's available as a free download.
The girls sing a simple melody over a bare drum track, handclaps, and subtle bass synth, with an accordion synth thrown in on the chorus and under RedRoc's rap. RedRoc- perhaps best known to international K-Pop fans as That Guy Who Made An MV With T.O.P In It- co-wrote this song with producer Ye-Yo. The song's simplicity is a welcome relief from the cacophony of "WASSUP", and while "Hotter than a Summer" isn't anything we haven't heard before, it does make for a nice listen. Now if only they had released it in the actual summer instead of September... Regardless, this is a good direction for them and leaves some anticipation on what they have in store for us next.
