Q: While you were on hiatus you attended college. This was a prime time for you to be dating. Did you have a boyfriend?
Sunmi: No, not at all. I thought I would at least go on blind dates, but that never happened. When I first went to school, people regarded me as feminine and lady-like, but it wasn't like that at all. My sunbae's and friends treated me as if I was one of the guys... so I never dated.
Q: Who came up with the idea of pink hair? Why pink?
Sunmi: I originally pushed for short black hair. But since my makeup is light and outfit simple, J.Y. Park said I would have to make my hair the focal point. I also don't wear heels on stage. I dance on bare feet.
Q: I never expected you to come back as a solo artist. When did you start preparing?
Sunmi: J.Y Park came to me last December and said, "I have a picture of you in my head." Around March, he let me listen to the song he had made for me. He said he created this song as he watched my practice singing/dancing videos while I was taking a break. He also said, "Whenever you're ready, we're ready for you to go out at any time."
Q: How did you feel when he told you that he had a song prepared for you?
Sunmi: I was so happy. When I first went into the recording booth I didn't have much expectations. However, once I listened to the first few seconds of the song I knew this was my song. I was so excited so I listened to it on my headphones, and I shared it with everyone at the office.
Q: It's been 3 years and 7 months since you made a comeback. What did this time period mean for you?
Sunmi: At a very young age I became a singer. With activities for "Tell Me," "So Hot," and "Nobody" in the United States, there was never a time for a break. Thankfully, we received lots of love from the public. However, at one point, I realized I was going on stage as if I were a robot--with no soul. I started off as a singer because I genuinely enjoyed it, but when it became work for me I was caught off guard. I didn't want to be a singer for just 3-4 years. My dream is to be an artist for a long period of time like J.Y. Park and Uhm Jung Hwa sunbae. But my desires were gone and my emotions started to disappear. I knew that if this continued to go on, I would not be able to become a talented person. I needed time to reflect on myself.
Q: While you were in Wonder Girls, you and Sohee were the maknaes. Did the unnie's give you a lot of advice?
Sunmi: Sun called me from Canada and apologized for not being able to make it to my first broadcast--even if she's pregnant she unleashed her leader qualities. Sohee, Lim, and I are all the same age so they playfully encouraged me. Yenny and Yubin unnie have been watching over me since we started working on the song. They helped me so much that they pretty much participated in making the song.
Q: This is your first time working solo. It must be very different from when you were in the Wonder Girls.
Sunmi: It feels empty. I have to do everything by myself. While I was in the Wonder Girls and was doing interviews... there were times when I was asked some uneasy questions but the unnis would take over and respond for me. However, now I have to do it all on my own. When I first did an interview I even had to take a relaxing pill. Although the members are all still watching over me, I'm still alone.
Q: While watching the MV, I noticed the dance moves look extremely difficult. Was it difficult learning?
Sunmi: I've never learned ballet. This time around, there were a lot of ballet movements involved. From the position of my hand, the way I breathe, and more... it was very different from my Wonder Girls times. I got a lot of bruises and went to the hospital, but I was still really happy. It was very exciting.
Q: Now that you've made your comeback you have to compete with hoobaes. When you were in Wonder Girls you had many hoobaes too.
Sunmi: I don't think of myself as a sunbae. I debuted as a solo artist, so I'm a new artist.
Q: Are there any artists that have impressed you recently?
Sunmi: SISTAR's Hyorin, Ailee--they're so cool. They have qualities that I don't have.
Q: What do you think of Crayon Pop?
Sunmi: So many people around me were talking about them so I looked up their video. It was a performance that I had not expected at all. It was so fun!
Q: There are a lot of fans who are curious as to if you will ever rejoin Wonder Girls.
Sunmi: If there's a good opportunity, I believe that we will all get back together at any time. At this point, everyone is working on their individual activities. I think this is a very important time for us individually. It's been 7 years since the Wonder Girls debuted. The members most likely all thought of testing their own capabilities. This is the time to explore those. As we all try our best in what we are doing, naturally there will be an opportunity for all of us to reunite.
